The desert near Diller Hollow, California - 1850

Jacob Williams leaned back against the cottonwood tree, drawing lazily on his cigarette. He was in love with life right now. A month ago, he’d struck out into the wild Californian desert to find his fortune in gold. He didn’t expect to find it as quickly as he did, especially since his claim was the dregs of the desert, the leftovers after many others
