    Introduction

    The nation of Israel has just lost its first king in battle, along with the supposed heir. David, anointed by God to be the next king, is out of the country and living amongst the enemy. Much of the land has been overrun by the dreaded Philistines. These are the conditions the reader is opened up to when started the bible book of Second Samuel.

    Author

    Looking at the title alone, you might conclude that the Second Book of Samuel would be the second of two books written by the prophet Samuel. As logical as that sounds, Samuel’s death in the first book makes such a conclusion misleadingly wrong. So who was the writer or writers of Second Samuel? And why is it called Second Samuel when the prophet Samuel is not even mentioned once in its entire 24 Chapters?

    Second Samuel is called such simply because at one time it was included in the same scroll as First Samuel. When the scrolls were later divided into two separate books, the name Second Samuel helped keep everyone on the same page, so to speak. In fact, Samuel himself could not have even written the entire book of First Samuel, since he dies in one of the concluding Chapters.
