Introduction
When one tries to get a drink from a fire hydrant, it is almost impossible because of the volume of water. The book of Mark is a fire hydrant of information from its very beginning to the end of the story. The author knows that something has happened on earth that will change the way people live forever and modify the relationship that man has with his God. The quicker man starts the learning process, the better off he will be.
The fact that God exists is not the news that Mark brings to the believers as everyone knew that God existed. The truth the author wants everyone to realize is the fact that God is here this very moment seeking to be part of the life of every individual on the planet. Mark wants to get right to the point of the story and give everyone the details of what transpired in order that people could live in reality and not in some dream world.
The Author of the Book of Mark
In dealing with any literature of the far past, it is very difficult to ascribe to any one particular person the authorship of a book written some fifty years after the death of Jesus. The same can be said for the book of Mark. Most people believe that the book was written by a young man named John Mark. This individual was not one of the original disciples. John Mark was one of the seventy that Jesus sent out, on an early mission journey.
Very few scholars believe that the book was written by some unknown author, but there is reason to believe that Mark is no more than a redactor of the traditions which were available to him. He wanted to guide and edify his readers. Some people believe that the book of Mark is a product of several different writers and thus a product of the Christian Community. (H.N. Roskam, 2004). There is ample reason to believe that Mark knew both Peter and Paul and he was adept at putting their words into written form. He had heard these great preachers time and again preach about Jesus and what were expected of all believers.
