    Chapter One

Audra Jacob was having one hell of an identity crisis. For the past two weeks, she’d been living in limbo. Overwhelmed by new powers, going home to her dying mother and young son wasn’t an option. The man she loved couldn’t touch her, or her body spontaneously burst into flames, burning him. As he was also her employer, she found herself homeless and jobless. She’d already turned to her friend, Emily, for help once, but she refused to put Emily or her daughter in danger again. Depressed didn’t even begin to describe how down she felt. She’d been saved from death by a ritual that merged her own spirit with that of a vengeful spirit. The woman inside of her burned like fire, so she’d called her phoenix. The phoenix was gone, but the long dead woman who’d once been the phoenix remained inside her. Occasionally, the small, sweet voice spoke encouraging words in her mind, and she welcomed the odd companionship. Insanity was the new sane, at least for her.

She’d been hiding out in an abandoned building, located in a not-so-nice part of Roman Falls. The crime in the big city was terrible, and she’d been using her power to help where she could. Her lover, or whatever Cain had become to her, wore a mask. She dressed in ratty street clothes. Costumes didn’t appeal to her, but neither did notoriety. She’d managed not to be recognized or photographed, and with the number of security cameras and cell phones in the city, she felt very lucky.

Soon she’d have to find some new clothes; she’d borrowed the ones she wore from Emily when she’d first gone on the run. She’d saved the man she loved, but discovered that even he wasn’t safe from her
