    Chapter 1

That summer lay before me, sprawling out like an incredible desert landscape. Why a desert? I had wound up back in my hometown, unable to find a job in time to stay around my college. The area was small and semi-deserted, with not much to offer for a young man like myself. I figured I'd spend my time wandering through the days, hoping to find something to occupy my time. Everyone has to do it, they'd said. You can't just sit around all day and do nothing.

The words echoed in my head throughout most of my life until finally I realized that I would try to live for more than work. I changed my degree from computer science to philosophy, and despite some grumbling from my parents, I set out to study what I really cared about. I had some money saved up, but I hoped to expand that amount a little bit over the summer with what I could find. Back at school, it was hard to maintain a job and keep up with my philosophy coursework. My professors expected nothing less than the best from me, so often I had to make sacrifices. Honestly, I'd rather sleep and study than work, so I asked my parents for some financial help and they actually agreed to it. I guess they were learning to relax a bit as they aged. Sure, I wasn't
