INTRODUCTION
Each year thousands of people apply to dental college in the hope of fulfilling their dream. They seek to become a dentist. With the small number of schools in North America, competition is fierce for each opening. Most candidates have exemplary grades, high DAT scores and experience in the field of dentistry. So how do you distinguish yourself from the rest and gain admission? The answer lies in your personal essay.
Most dental schools require applicants to write a brief explanation of why they wish to become a dentist. In addition to demonstrating writing skills, the essay provides a window into the personality of the applicant. Do you truly understand what it means to be a dentist or are you simply in love with the thought of being a doctor? Will you be able to meet the moral and ethical obligations the profession demands? What will you do with the training? Do you have concrete goals that will advance the profession? In short, will you use your scientific knowledge to protect and better the lives of people? In order to gain admission, the successful applicant must stand out from the rest in the mind of admission counselors. This is attained through a thoughtful and well-crafted personal essay.
How to Write a Personal Essay for Dental College helps you write a compelling document. The Do’s and Don’ts
section covers common mistakes that keep well-qualified candidates from getting into dental school. The section titled Writing the Essay
will teach you how to present your background and goals as if you were already a dentist. Before writing your essay, I encourage you to read all of the templates provided even if they do not pertain to your area of interest or background. Each contains ideas to stimulate your own creativity and help your personal essay stand out from the rest.
WRITING THE ESSAY
There are three principles to follow when writing a personal essay. First, tell the truth. With so many qualified applicants fighting for a limited number of positions, applicants might be tempted to embellish their experience or credentials. Resist the temptation to exaggerate. Always tell the truth. If
