Dan Poynter is earning a well-deserved reputation as one of the most enterprising small publishers in the country by writing about his own experiences as a self-publishing author, and sharing that writing with other small enterprises. One of the results has been this book on the ins and outs of taking part in book exhibits and fairs-everything from choosing the best ones, through creating the display booth itself, to handling the mad throngs of customers when the show opens.

FOREWORD
More than 22 million people visit trade shows every year in the U.S. Although this book focuses on Book Expo America, the largest and most important book show in the United States, most of what it contains is applicable to any trade show.
But, by focusing on the publishing trade, Book Fairs is able to share a wealth of information to those of us who attend this wild, ‘bookish,’ and wonderful event every year. I attended the 2012 BEA and found Book Fairs to be the most important thing in my briefcase, (actually I had a book backpack), and thanks to Dan’s wise advice, I also wore a suit and comfortable walking shoes – and after putting on several miles of trekking through the Jacob Javits Center each day, I’m glad I did! My feet are eternally grateful for the advice in this book!
Dan also provides exceedingly astute advice on exhibit procedures, booth set-up, how to work the room,
and other tips which are applicable to nearly all book fairs and trade shows.
Everyone in your firm planning to attend a trade show will benefit from this book. For us, it proved invaluable to those staffing the booth, as well as to our team in charge of organizing all details of participation in the exhibit. Even our seasoned veterans found the information useful.
The first edition of this book was written in 1980, when Dan first started attending book fairs. Over the years, he has added a wealth of additional savvy insights based on his many experiences. Dan’s approach is vigorous and even intense, but you stand to gain a great deal from these fairs if you follow the advice he gives. I am not alone in praising this book. Publishers Weekly has quoted Dan often and excerpted parts of Book Fairs. They especially loved Dan’s hard-core business advice.
There is magic and wisdom in this little book. It will help you build a successful strategy for maximizing your time, energy and money, which is critical in this ever-changing world
