    Author's Note

This short story was originally written for entry into a competition, in which it eventually placed second (a delightful surprise!). However, on reading the story again, I realised that I was guilty of 'data dumping' great swaths of my newfound knowledge on sleep cycles and memory processing. For the Smashwords Edition, I have revised some portions of the story to give it a better flow.

He was conscious of the elasticised band that stretched around his chest, holding the heart monitor in place beneath his thin blue cotton pyjamas. Sticky electrode pads pulled ever so slightly on the fine grey hairs that wisped along his hairline. He wanted to touch them, scratch free the one little hair he could feel tugging too tight, but he didn't want to move because his finger was clamped in a plastic, high-tech clothes peg. Murray glanced down the length of the bed once more, worried by the red glow
