    Chapter 1

As she continued walking in the parking lot toward her car, Celeste fumbles in her bag looking for her ringing cell phone. Not forgetting how rude she thinks Max had been by not flirting with her, she knew he just wanted to look professional in front of that funny looking lady that was in the store while they were talking. Yeah, that’s what it was! She knew he couldn’t turn down ‘alla dis’ if she was really throwing it on him. She flirted, but Celeste wouldn’t have invited Max or any other man for that matter out for real. To do something like that would change her whole life in a way she wasn’t ready for. But it did upset her that Max didn’t flirt back. She needed that flirtation response in her life. It’s all she had left. As for Max, it would be a good long minute before he’d see her cute ass back up in that cell phone store, that’s for sure!

Where is this phone? Ah, there it is!

Celeste pulls the ringing cell phone out, stops and reads the screen. ‘Private Number 411’ is flashing. Them damn random advertisements, she hates them. She declines the call and the screen quickly goes blank. Having a mirrored screen, Celeste takes a quick peek at her face and make-up in the phone’s reflection. Yep, still gorgeous! Never mind that Max, he just missed a good opportunity. Then, thinking on how much she has to get done today, she begins to throw her phone back into her bag to start walking again. But before she can close it, she glances and sees the yellow postal pickup notice inside. She pulls it out and starts to read the address to the post office.

Excuse me lady? I hope your fine ass ain’t in no hurry? A man’s voice rings out just as she reaches her car door.

Celeste looks up to see some older black man staring at her from the passenger side of the car.

What? What did you say to me? She gives him a look of disgust.

Well I’m just saying, I wanna holler at your fine ass for a minute if you not in no hurry, that’s all. The man repeats with a half smile.

He had the nerve to really repeat what he had just said. She looks the man up and down.

What? What do you want? She gives him attitude hoping he will just walk away, I don’t know where the closet barber shop is, I can’t help you bye!"

Celeste presses her finger on the car handle lock and then opens her car door.

Damn, bitch! Fuck you then! The man yells at her.

Celeste stops herself just short of falling into the driver’s seat. Being Puerto Rican and growing up in the poorest part of town, Celeste didn’t take shit from anyone. And this dude, he didn’t even know her! Standing back up and looking over the top of her car towards the man, she asked an important question.

Did you just call me out my name? She didn’t expect or wait for an answer, I’m sorry Sir. I am in a little bit of a rush so I didn’t take the time to greet you properly, Celeste sounded sincere. My name is Michelle,
