    Prologue

    I'm not a fortuitous man. My life is like most others; not unusual, specked with only fragments of interest that blow fleetingly on a soft breeze and vanish quietly into a starless night. Luck and adventure are things I associate with books and movies of idyllic lives. Things I observe, not things I experience. And so the story I am about to relay seems out of place in my life, such as it is; a vagabond stranger that wandered off the beaten track and found me, caught me unaware and swept me up into its tumultuous maelstrom.

    To protect their interests – and mine, to a degree – I have changed the names of those persons whose lives affected mine the day I chased that storm into a quiet rural town in the middle of the sun-beaten yellow plains, where my truck kicked the bucket and left me stranded in a weatherless tempest.
