Laura's arrival was met with some consternation, especially amongst the more superstitious of the towns inhabitants. The little place, on the outskirts of Sligo, wasn't used to visitors, particularly ones like this. The girl had walked, unannounced and unaccompanied, into the only school in the place armed with a slip of paper.

This was a very select school, students were here by invitation only and the head teacher had duly protested. Pressure had been applied from above, however, and they'd had no choice but to admit the thirteen year old.

She was small for her age and habitually walked with her head bowed. Her pale skin, thin lips and piercing blue eyes attracted too much attention for her liking, but what really set her apart from the others was her hair. Long and straight, reaching all the way down to her waist, and white. Pure as the driven snow, someone had once said.

Colourless was most people's first thought. The girl was almost albino. Almost, but not quite. She was...different.

The rumours had started immediately, of course. Within a day she was both abandoned and an orphan, she was a problem child and a poor wee waif. She did nothing to dispel any of the rumours, she simply didn't care.

Martha Heath, one of the teachers had crossed herself upon seeing the girl for the first time. The head teacher had noticed and rebuked the woman later. We will treat Laura the same as any other girl.

They thought she hadn't seen the gesture. They were wrong, Laura
