About Our Cover Story – Beverly Hills

Since jet setting is part of such a grand lifestyle, the Insiders’ Lifestyle Guides series theme includes a cultural or travel experience with every book. That is, between promotional junkets, film festivals and red carpet appearances, celebrities can rack up as many frequent-flyer miles as they do trips to rehab. And so can you, once you have an insider bird’s eye view of the possibilities.

Whether traveling by plane or virtually by way of these pages, our cover story, Beverly Hills California, located on the west side of the Los Angeles metropolitan area, between Wilshire and Santa Monica Boulevards is home to the Rodeo Drive shopping area. Rodeo Drive is at its best during the evening near Christmas, when lights and flowers decorate the streets, and the stores get more gussied up than their best-dressed patrons.

In addition to shopping and dining, one of Beverly Hills’ main attractions is its sprawling estates. Of these, Greystone Park and Mansion is not only the largest, but also the only one available to the public. Occupying sixteen acres, this 55-room castle was built in 1926 by oil tycoon Edward Doheny. It has made appearances in a crop of Hollywood films, including Indecent Proposal, Spider-Man, X-Man and more. Owned by the City of Beverly Hills, visitors can take a peek at this spectacular mansion free of charge. Greystone Park & Mansions’ lush gardens and panoramic views make it a refreshing oasis in the bustling city of Beverly Hills.

Those hoping to take in all of Beverly Hills can opt to go on the Beverly Hills Trolley Tour. This 40-minute narrated tour provides insight into the different aspects that add to the city’s timeless appeal.

If you seek fine dining and a chance to rub elbows with celebrities and LA’s most rich and famous, you’ll find fabled Beverly Hills restaurants on and near Rodeo Drive, such as Mr. Chow’s, Wolfgang Puck’s Spago, Crustacean and CUT at the Beverly Wilshire hotel. Most require advance reservations. For more dining options, head on over to Beverly Hills Restaurant Row on La Cienega Boulevard between Wilshire Boulevard and Beverly Drive. There are restaurants ranging from fast food and diners, up to high-end restaurants.

    Makeup Artist

Even the hottest A-listers have flaws: unflattering noses, acne problems, thin lips, you name it. Who makes it all less noticeable? Makeup artists. The most talented of their kind, makeup artists spill their secrets, so you can fake perfection too.

    Lighting

The best light for applying makeup is the kind that comes through your window. Sitting at a kitchen table near a window is a lot brighter than in a bathroom without windows and you have more space. Second best is a makeup mirror. A good makeup mirror should have an adjustable arm and magnification for more accurate makeup application. Good makeup is all in the details and magnification is the single biggest factor when it comes to applying detailed makeup.

An adjustable arm can enable you to get exactly the right position from your mirror. This means that you can sit comfortably and in a position that suits you best and allows you to apply makeup accurately and smoothly whenever you want to.

Another essential component of a good makeup mirror is a magnified side to the mirror itself. The magnification will help you to apply your makeup accurately and in detail ensuring that you don’t get any ugly lines or smudges because you will be able to see more clearly. Magnification strengths can vary from two times to five times or more.

    Tools and Products

Tools and products are equally important as your makeup skills. Just by improving the quality of your brushes and using richer pigmented products, your application will immediately be better, even without improving your technique. So if you really want to apply your makeup like a pro, do what the professionals do and start with proper makeup brushes.

There are eight basic brushes that you need as your own makeup artist:

    1. Foundation brush. If you find your foundation brush tends to blob too much coverage right where they first touch your face; try using a damp beauty blender sponge instead to paint on makeup. It will allow for very sheer coverage.

    2. Concealer brush. It’s best to have two: a slick Taklon one a half inch wide for under the eyes and a tiny, pointy one for blemishes.

    3. Fluffy powder brush. This is a large powder brush.

    4. Blush brush. This is a slightly smaller fluffy brush. It can also be used for bronzer and highlighter applications.

    5. Flat eye shadow brush. This brush should be the size of a fingertip.

    6. Small blending brush. This is a smaller shadow brush type for smudging and blending.

    7. Precision angle brush.

    8. Lip brush.

Most makeup artists prefer natural bristles for any brush used to apply powder. Not only are they the fluffiest and the softest, but they also have a cuticle – just like human hair – that really grabs pigment and holds on until you place it exactly where you want on the face. Blue squirrel, pony hair, goat, and kolinsky sable are the best.

It’s more important to find the right brush for each task than to have a pretty matched set on your vanity. For each brush, look for a slightly domed shape – it rolls best across the skin with the least drag – and a nice fluffy texture, which deposits less pigment so you can be precise. (Synthetics are really only good for applying creams and liquids.)

Buy the best brushes you can afford. High-quality brushes are worth the price. They don’t just perform the best; they also make applying makeup easy. These more expensive brushes can easily last 20 years with proper maintenance.

Once a month, mix warm water with a little shampoo for natural bristles or dish soap for synthetics. Swish the brushes around, rinse well, blot with paper towels, and lay them flat until they’re completely dry.

    Application Techniques

Once you have your tools, you need to know how to hold them. Where you hold a brush on the handle affects your control. The closer your fingers are to the barrel (the silver section beneath the brush head), the more pressure you put on the brush head and vice versa. In general, if you want to apply color evenly, place your fingers on the center of the brush handle.

    Makeup Removal

Everyone likes a fresh start. If you want to wake up with clean, glowing skin, then you absolutely must take off all your makeup before going to bed.

The process of taking off your makeup should be gentle and should never leave your skin dehydrated or irritated. Using your fingers, swipe a small amount of cleansing oil across your lids, eyebrows, and lips, and then lightly massage it all over your face. This will soften your skin and loosen the makeup. Then take a flat, circle cotton pad and pour a little cleansing oil on it. Go over the same spots again, being careful not to scrub back and forth. Just skim the surface in one direction to pull up the color.

When you wear waterproof mascara, swap the cleansing oil for a waterproof-eye-makeup remover. Otherwise you’ll have to rub too hard causing breakage to your lashes. Soak a pad with remover, press down softly on the lashes for a few seconds so the formula soaks in, and then slowly move the pad across the eyes. This technique also works for long-lasting lipstick.

After your eye makeup is gone, wash your face with a mild foaming or gel cleanser to remove dirt and oil. Then rinse with warm water using a soft, damp washcloth to gently exfoliate the skin and ensure your pores are thoroughly clean. Finish with a moisturizer.

    Makeup Artist Profession

A makeup artist is an artist whose medium is the human body, applying makeup and prosthetics for theatrical, television, film, fashion, magazines and other similar productions including all aspects of the modeling industry. Awards given for this profession in the entertainment industry include the Academy Award for Makeup and even several entertainment industry awards such as the Emmy awards and the Golden Globes to name a few.

In the United States as well as the other parts of the globe, professional licenses are required by agencies in order for them to hire the makeup artist. Bigger production companies have in-house makeup artists on their payroll although most makeup artists generally are freelance and their times remain flexible depending on the projects.

    Fashion Makeup

Fashion makeup is used in magazine photography as well as on the fashion runway. Avant-garde makeup is also an applicable technique used for projects that require experimental themes. Fashion makeup is also commonly used in television and film ranging for the natural prime look to more sophisticated applications such as color balance.

    Theatrical Makeup

Stage makeup is used as a method in conjunction with stage lighting to highlight the actors’ faces in order to make expressions visible to the audience from moderate distances. This often includes defining the eyes and lips as well as the highlights and lowlights of the facial bones.

    Special Effects Makeup (FX Makeup)

The use of special effects techniques enhancing physical features to exhibit metaphysical characteristics as well as fantasy makeup is another makeup technique. The use of prosthetics and plaster casting are also required for projects that entail non-human appearances. Accents such as theatrical blood and ooze are also techniques applicable to this type of makeup.

    Airbrushing

The use of an airbrush, which is a small air-operated device that sprays various media including alcohol and water-based makeup by a process of nebulization, is called airbrushing. The earliest record of this type of cosmetic application dates back to the 1925 film version of Ben-Hur – it has recently been re-popularized by the advent of HDTV and Digital Photography, where the camera focuses on higher depths of detail.

Liquid foundations that are high in coverage but thin in texture are applied with the airbrush for full coverage without a heavy buildup of product.

    Bridal Makeup

Bridal makeup is a new segment in a makeup artist’s repertoire. From ethnic, to glamorous to contemporary, makeup artists are now an important part of wedding planning; in Asia, Europe and North America.

    High Definition

This is an art, which involves the use of light reflectors and ingredients such as minerals to give the skin a flawless finish. This was developed due to the further development of high definition mediums and the cost implications of airbrush makeup.

    Foundations – Photo Finish

Flawless skin is part of a model’s job description. The masters of these looks are makeup artists with their arsenal of foundations, concealers, powders, and highlighters. So how can anyone really look like she has perfect skin without any makeup on?

The key to turning skin impeccable is taking the time to buff and polish it to absolute radiance. You’ll layer on what will seem like an excess of products, but applied in thin coats and then gently pressed into the surface with a tissue until makeup becomes one with the skin, you will look like you have flawless skin. Think in terms of bringing Photoshop to life with makeup.

    Primer

A system of very thin layers, with a primer sandwiched between moisturizer and foundation, can create a better surface for makeup. When you really want that flawless look you see in airbrushed ads, it’s worth the extra minutes.

Before even cracking open a foundation bottle, you must first exfoliate and moisturize well. Then, just like you prime a wall before you paint it, you should prime your face before you apply foundation. Makeup artists swear primers go one step further than moisturizers. They’ll even out skin tone, help your makeup stay on longer, and absorb oil with salicyclic acid. Other benefits:

They allow foundation to stay put in hot weather.

They help prevent skin from absorbing talc and pigment from your foundation as well as preventing talc from drawing oil from the skin.

They also contain botanicals such as lavender, orange, jasmine, rose, geranium, grape, kiwi and aloe extracts to soothe and refresh the skin.

Using a primer underneath your foundation will also help you avoid a cake face.

If you don’t want the added step of a primer to your makeup routine, you can slather on moisturizer before makeup application.

    Sunblock

If skin is oily, skip moisturizer altogether in the morning, but never leave home without applying sunblock. It probably seems counterintuitive, but a healthy dose of sunblock is an essential part of controlling oil and shine. Mineral-based sunblocks rich in zinc and titanium oxide protect against both UVA and UVB rays and have the additional benefit of absorbing oil.

Apply sunblock directly to bare skin so it absorbs properly, and remember that quantity is important. SPFs are tested in very controlled amounts, so if you’re not applying enough, you won’t get the full benefit. Use a teaspoon of sunblock on your face. If you feel greasy, you can top the sunblock with a mattifying primer that contains a silicone-based emollient such as cyclopentasiloxane.

Choose a sunblock with an SPF of 30 or above that lists UVA/UVB protection or broad-spectrum on the bottle – this means it shields against UVA, the rays that can lead to wrinkles and skin cancer, and UVB, the rays that burn.

Combining antioxidants with SPF can help minimize sun damage, so look for idebenone, green tea, or vitamin E on the label.

If you have sensitive skin, try a gentler mineral sunblock that contains titanium dioxide or zinc oxide.

Regular sunblock should be applied before eye cream; mineral sunblock after it. Pat a pea-size drop under each eye, covering corners,
