About the Author
Introduction
Eight dollars. Maybe a little less, maybe a little more. But it usually cost around eight dollars to mail your demo tape, cover letter, and 8x10 headshot to a potential employer. This, of course, was many moons ago in a galaxy far, far way. A world in which many readers of this book will barely find conceivable. Add to the cost of postage the three to four days it took for your package to arrive at its destination and we now teeter on the verge of being archaic. But those of us who have been around awhile can look back on those years of licking stamps and recall the hope and optimism we felt as our precious materials were sent out into the abyss. We did it. And we’d do it again if it came down to it.
My personal experience with demo tapes began in the late 1980’s. Manning the overnight shift of college radio station 89.7 KYMC in St. Louis, I had little else to show for my time on the air than the cassette of each broadcast which I would scrutinize mercilessly on the drive home each morning. I would make note of the talk breaks that I felt demonstrated some degree of wit, skill, or relevance and eventually dub them onto a master tape using my Panasonic dual cassette deck. When I had thoroughly convinced myself that the content rolling seamlessly on magnetic tape between the two plastic spools was pure audio gold, I would make a few copies, type my name and parents’ phone number on a white label, and mail them off to radio stations in exotic locales such as Los Angeles, New York, and Miami.
As my radio career began to take shape, I maintained the practice of recording every show I did. Real content began to arise in the form of celebrity interviews, in studio skits, sound effects, phone bits, and talk breaks that even Wolfman Jack would have nodded approvingly to. For years these tapes filled boxes remained stoically stacked
