Introduction
by Siri Paulson
Welcome to The Best of Turtleduck Press! It's our third anniversary—we were formed in summer 2010, although our launch wasn't until December of that year We're celebrating by putting out a collection of our best works, as voted on by the members of the Turtleduck Press collective. In this anthology you'll find contemporary fantasy, Gothic steampunk, comedic SF, poetry, and a teaser for our next release, a fantasy novel coming in December 2013.
We're proud of the wide range of speculative fiction we publish and the quality of our work. When we set out to create Turtleduck Press, we knew we wanted to focus on speculative subgenres and themes other than those dominating the shelves. That's why you'll find gay SF romance, science fantasy, and non-dystopian, non-apocalyptic YA among our novels. We've worked hard to put out high-quality products, maintain a regular publishing schedule of three long works and nine short works each year, and otherwise treat this venture as professionally as we can—and we think it shows.
Here for your reading pleasure are...
...To the Waters and the Wild
by Kit Campbell, a tale of a family drawn to the river behind their house by forces they struggle to understand;
...Imprint
by Erin Zarro, a poem about the power of lost love;
...Fanged Bunny Slippers
by KD Sarge, a short story starring the irrepressible and wholly unrepentant Joss;
...The Dangers of Creation; or, A Machine to Rival Man
by Siri Paulson, a story about a man obsessed with making strange and wonderful musical instruments;
...and the beginning of Shards by Kit Campbell, a novel about a young woman drawn into an ancient story.
We hope you enjoy The Best of Turtleduck Press!
To The Waters and the Wild
by Kit Campbell
On some level, she was aware of how cliché it all was—the family and friends all dressed in black, the solemn preacher saying the same thing he always did, pretending it applied to the deceased more than it had the last hundred souls. And the rain—a true downpour, clacking on somber umbrellas and mixing with tears.
It clattered on the lid of the coffin, a dull, hollow noise. Fitting, as it was empty, all for show. There was no body.
Water had taken her brother, and now water welcomed him home.

The river wound through a meadow off their yard. It was really more of a creek, except when the rains came; then it would threaten to escape its banks, rushing past, roaring with latent power. As a child, she and her brother had
