About this ebook

Maybe Marty got his lifelong fascination with the idea of being eaten alive from his mother's famous, scandalous oracular relationship with Osiris, the god of death and rebirth. Maybe he got it from his odd friendship with the Sphinx that lived outside of town. Either way, when a strange noblewoman from a far-away land comes to the temple for a prophecy, and Marty learns her deadly secret, his reaction isn't what anyone expected...

    The Sphinx

Stay, unwary traveller, and tell me: what walks on four legs in the morning, on two legs in the afternoon, and... oh, it's you.

The booming, wicked voice of the Sphinx ceased its ringing volume and dropped to a disappointed snort.

I'm afraid you've got me on that one. I have no idea. I guess you'll have to eat me. A plain but hopeful face under a short untidy shock of black hair poked around the side of the rock.

"Marty, I've told you the answer to that one five times. I know you know it." The Sphinx's great head with her beautiful face lowered back down onto her furry forepaws.

No, really, it slipped my mind. I'm really forgetful sometimes. I know I screwed up, but, I'm willing to pay the price. Marty walked into full view of the Sphinx, as she lay gloriously outlined by the rising sun. His tan robes were tied awkwardly around him, making him look like a very large, very wrinkled potato.

"I've told you, Marty, that really doesn't do it for me. I don't want a willing victim. I want to eat someone who is doing his best to rise to the challenge, to out-think me. You're just... throwing the contest. There's no challenge in that. And anyway, I don't understand this weird sexual thing you have about being eaten."

Marty blushed. I don't have a sexual thing about being eaten.

"Right. Of course you don't. That's why you come here every morning, but despite being a clasically-trained scribe and the son of a temple oracle, you can never answer any of my riddles, even the easy ones-- even the ones I've told you the answers to multiple times. You're not trying to get eaten, you're... what? What is it that you're looking for here, Marty? Also, did you bring me another goat?"

The young man perked up. Yes! Two, actually, I got a good deal on these and you seemed to really like--

    "Yes, yes,
