37 Healthy, Natural Beverages - Salem Williams
Preface
What's in your cup?
The answer to that question is as individual as you and I. For me, it is comforting to know exactly what I'm putting into my body and I love having a new reason to use my favorite cup.
My mother finds comfort in having an excuse to bring out the good china. Many of my friends say that, for them, comfort means lowering costs without sacrificing the good stuff. Others are wishing for ways to avoid chemicals, artificial flavorings and dyes, allergens and gluten and genetically-modified ingredients. It may be a great comfort to you to be able to control quality and freshness, lower your white sugar intake, or avoid hidden ingredients.
As you read, follow and enjoy these recipes, you may learn a few new things (or even old ones) you didn't know. And of course, once you're creating and designing your own cup of comfort, I'll be asking you, What's in your cup?
I hope you'll share!
~Salem, Your Village Herbalist
Chapter 1 - To Your Good Health!
Pre-packaged Convenience Concerns
Once upon a time (about 45 years ago, really), if you wanted a cup of lovely Chamomile tea, or any other herbal tea really, you had to grow the herbs yourself, wild-craft your supplies (know where, how, when and what to harvest), or search out a health food store to buy them. Then, heaven help us, you had to know how to prepare them, and what special equipment, such as a tea ball, you might need. Today, with simplicity, availability and shelf-life (among other things) in mind, you can buy specially-blended herbal teas already packaged in tea bags. These are simple to prepare with the instructions right on the package. And they're all so tasty and affordable, it won't take long for your cupboards to be overflowing with a variety of colorful packages.
Sounds great, right? Here's the problem; there are very few guarantees that pre-packaged herbal teas are actually healthful! For example, a great many contain questionable ingredients and are not always gluten-free, soy-free, etc., and that raises concerns for people with dangerous allergies or illnesses such as celiac disease.
The party will start in a moment, but first, have a look at some of the potential health hazards lurking in many commercially-produced herbal tea beverages, frozen treats and mass-produced smoothies. At the end of the book, the Bibliography contains some invaluable links, including a link to Food Facts, where there's a wonderful database that tracks and monitors questionable ingredients used by a variety of companies. (Membership in Food Facts is free.)
