Many thanks to my daughter, my family and friends for all the support you’ve given me.
Prologue
The muffled cries of the girl’s mother finally subsided and I looked down at her to see that she had finally passed out. Her head had slumped down but the duct tape held her up in the chair. Blood was trickling down the right side of her head where I had just hit her with the handle of my Colt and stained the blue and white bandana I’d used to gag her. Now that she was finally quiet, I contemplated whether or not to have eggs for breakfast or a bagel with cream cheese as I walked toward the refrigerator.
The sound of a vehicle coming down the gravel road caught my attention and I turned my head in the direction of it. As I heard it slow down I ran my hand through my hair to get it off my sweaty forehead and walked to the window to pull the heavy drapes back slightly so I could see outside. I recognized the vehicle was Johnny’s van so I walked outside to meet him and take care of business.
The sunshine blinded me for a moment so I raised my hand to block the intensity of the light while Johnny backed up the van next to the shed. He got out and walked toward me, with a manila envelope in his hand. The fat on his body jiggled as he walked toward me; I noticed his long greasy red hair was pulled back in a ponytail and a piece of food was caught in his red beard. Looking at Johnny was disgusting; smelling him was revolting since the man reeked of Budweiser and body odor.
Mommy, is that you? Is someone out there? Help us! Please!
the girl inside the shed shouted in a choked voice.
He isn’t going to be happy if he finds out about the mother you know?
I shrugged. What I did to the mother was my business, not part of the deal I’d made. Johnny could piss off as far as I was concerned.
You got my money?
I snarled at him
