Your Little Secret Series

You can go in now, Tom, the secretary said. Tom reluctantly stood up and entered the office. He did his best to swallow his pride. He certainly had not anticipated things shaking out as they did but he could not afford to show any emotion other than a keen desire to try even harder at his job.

Allie sat behind her desk and sized up Tom as he approached. She was beautiful and put out an overtly sexual vibe that Tom was drawn to. But he wasn’t there that day to think about that.

She gave him a little smile and offered him a seat. Well. She studied him. I wasn’t expecting that. I don’t think any of us were. But let’s try to make the best of it.

Yes, Tom said, choking back his frustration. Absolutely.

The day had started with George, the district supervisor and mentor to both Tom and Allie, announcing that Allie had been named sales manager for their office. This had come as quite a shock to Tom who considered himself the favorite to win the promotion and he had not been alone in that. Everyone in the office expected him to win it, even Allie.

So what now, Tom thought.

I’m really going to rely on you going forward, Tom. I have tremendous respect for you. And I’d like to think that we can remain friends.

Tom felt his face flush. He tried his best not to show any reaction but it was a battle he was losing.

He and Allie had become friends and nearly more than that. They were both in their early 30’s and had always gotten on quite well as they shared a similarly quirky sense of humor.

Following years of friendly office chit-chat and flirting they finally went for drinks after work several times. That led to some drunken groping in the alley behind a bar and also once in Tom’s car. Things never progressed beyond that despite his best efforts and he was still disappointed.

He told himself they never got together because they both loved their competitive sales work and neither could afford the distractions a work-place romance would bring.

But the truth was that Allie had spurned his advances for reasons she never made clear. And then shortly after began a relationship with George. The fact that George was married and much older than Allie didn’t seem to be a deterrent to her. She clearly wanted to be with him and Tom was left with lingering questions and a painful, unrequited affection for Allie that just wouldn’t go away.

The final nail for Tom was having to sit there helplessly as George announced to the entire sales force that Allie was their new boss. Allie was his new boss. Tom knew if he said anything about her affair with George his job would be in jeopardy - and he was desperate for money.

Are you ok? Allie asked.

Sure. It’s fine. You know I’m devoted to this place.

No, that’s not what I mean. Allied looked him thoughtfully
