    Strangers

    Ted Stetson

That winter Sally went to the lake with her brand new ice skates and wore a knitted white scarf with a light blue coat that brought out her blue eyes. Her blond hair, not long blonde hair, the nuns wouldn't allow long hair, was in a pony tail. She skated with Elizabeth ‘Boobs’ Goldberg and Joanne 'the jock' Rodriguez.

Boobs walked unsteadily on her skates. Jo did most of her skating on her ankles. Sally tried to skate, but wasn't very good. She stumbled and wobbled around the skating loop.

Guys would skate past Sally and shout and she'd fall into the snow bank. Beth and Jo's brothers, Bob and Ray said hi, then they went over to play hockey. Beth and Jo were annoyed, sometimes amused, that their brothers liked Sally. Beth's brother Bob used to like Jo and Jo's brother Ray used to like Beth, before they started hanging around with Sally.

Ut oh, Beth said when she saw Karol coming down to the Forest City lake.

Boys followed Karol everywhere. If she walked to the stores some boy would give her a ride home. Karol didn't go to private Catholic school like Sally; she went to public school in Levittown. When Karol got off the bus a block from her house, she always got a ride home.

Mrs. Campbell would shake her head and say, tsk tsk, but if she needed a ride she would ask Karol to call one of her 'boy'
