    Buildings - CC Stokes

    Chapter 1

The tiny meteor was no larger than a grain of sand. If it had entered the atmosphere it never would have reached the ground. Instead it hit an object that was circling the earth and started a chain reaction that changed how people all over the planet viewed themselves. It was made of iron and nickel and had been traveling in space for more than 3 million years. It’s small size allowed it to avoid hitting anything else so it was traveling incredibly fast when it crashed into the object. If anyone had been watching when it collided they would have described it as simply vanishing. An instant later a large black sphere appeared out of nowhere and around the planet below 32 structures, that had been invisible, materialized.

    Chapter 2

So anyway, after I discovered this invisible lair I decided, why not help those who are less fortunate than I am. Now sheriff if you need help, any kind of help that you can't take care of yourself all you need to do is shine a flash light over the top of the old milk factory at the end of the street and I'll come save you. Jake nodded more to himself than the sheriff.

Sheriff Green sighed, this kind of thing was about the only excitement he ever had in his county. Everyone thought Jake was a little crazy, and now he was going on about invisible buildings floating in the air. At least it was more interesting to listen to him and his tall stories than it was to just sit here all day doing nothing.

Jacob Russell, Jake for short, had been born in Hopeville. He was a good kid but something happened when he was in the Army and he hadn't been quite right since. He came home about 2 years ago and his parents were killed in an accident shortly after his return. In a big town he might have been just another homeless veteran, but in Hopeville he was part of the community. True he had spent more than one night in a cell because of his drinking and that always included a wild story or two but that did not change how the people of Hopeville felt about him.

Well Jake, I thank you for the offer, and when we need you we'll be sure to call.... Have you had anything to eat today? I hear Martha over at the cafe has made some fresh apple pie. I bet if you ask really nice she'll give you a slice.

I like pie. Jake mumbled looking interested. He rambled on some more as he began to wander off towards the cafe.

Sheriff Green shook his head and chuckled to himself, he wasn't sure why but he did like Jake. His next thought was that apple pie did sound pretty good and he decided he'd head over to Martha's and get himself some as well.

Just before he reached the door to the cafe Deputy Carol came running up, Have you heard what's going on?

Sure have, Jake was just telling me about an invisible floating building that he lives in. Sheriff Green jerked his thumb over his shoulder towards the milk factory without looking. Should we ever need help saving the town all we have to do is shine a light over the top of that old factory at the end of the street and flash it a few times then Jake will come and help us.

The deputy looked uncomfortable and said, Well he might not be all that crazy. Look for yourself Sheriff.

He turned and looked down the road. Floating just above the abandoned building that had been Scott’s Milk Works was a large circular two-story building.

    Chapter 3

Carla Verde was feeling a bit irritated as she walked across the campus to her dorm. Her biology professor didn't seem to realize that students took more than one class at a time. That they had work to do for all of their other teachers and professors and that each of them felt that they should be the students’ first priority. Her professor seemed to feel it was perfectly acceptable to give people that have real lives of their own ten-page papers on the social dynamics of mating fruit flies, or whatever and then make it due in two days.

She stormed on and promptly ran into a student who was just standing in the middle of the sidewalk. He stumbled and fell to the ground, gave her a strange look, scrambled back to his feet and ran off. Carla felt a snarl rising to her lips, not only had her teacher put her in a foul mood, but in doing so he had managed to make her be rude to someone else!

As she continued walking another student was just standing in the way. He seemed not to notice her at all until she said, Excuse me. Then he whirled around, stared at her for a moment and ran away as well. She looked around and noticed a lot of students were acting odd and most were not moving. Their teachers must have screwed them over too she thought, uncharitably.

Then, in an overly dramatic gesture she threw her gaze heavenwards. Now she had intended to say something to the effect of Good God why do you let these keepers of knowledge plague us so? All she managed was, Good God... then she stopped in mid sentence because floating directly above her head approximately 40 feet off the ground was a large dark circle that blotted out most of the sky.

    Chapter 4

Col. Danvers was filling out reports when he noticed a commotion in the hallway outside of his office. Curious he walked to the door and looked out. People were moving in a panicky way towards the exits. He was about to ask someone what was going on when he heard an announcement over the PA system.

Attention, we are evacuating the building temporarily, please secure all confidential materials, gather your things and report to the nearest security station where you will be escorted outside. Thank you.

Danvers was a good soldier who followed orders and had a special knack for completing the assignments his superiors gave him. So, faced with such specific directions he turned back into his office and started to put things away. Lastly he pulled the hard drive out of his computer, locked it in his safe and picked up his cane. At the security checkpoint he waited patiently behind the mob trying desperately to get out of the building.

An MP walked up to him and said, Col. Danvers? I've been ordered to escort you directly through the checkpoints to a secure location. Come with me please.

He was led through a series of corridors and noticed that he was being led away from the exit and towards the courtyard of the Pentagon. The first two checkpoints were swarmed with civilians trying to get out of the building. Due to the sensitive material housed here each person had
