You shouldn’t be drunk on the brink of nuclear annihilation, but it’s my first week in Korea and I’ve already settled into a routine.

How many is that, man, James says as I give him a smile.

I don’t know. Does it matter?

If you don’t want me holding you up by your backpack strap the rest of the night, I would stop at two.

Big words for someone who looks as rough as I do. He has a point, though. I’ll need to walk home by myself tonight. He would never forgive me for taking him away from his date. She gives me a drunken smile.

It’s over Hyewon, I say. I’m cutting you off. You weigh, what, 90 pounds? I reach over and grab the green bottle of soju.

Come on, man! She says, but makes no effort to retrieve it.

Any more, James, and it won’t be legal to take her to a hotel. We laugh, but speak too fast for her to understand. That’s the trick to hiding things from Hyewon. She’s good at English, but not fast enough to process the low soldier dialect.

Her head is too heavy for her and she rests it on James’s shoulder. It’s my signal to leave.
