    Bible Verses

    Genesis 22

1 And it came to pass after these things, that God did prove Abraham, and said to him, Abraham; and he said, Here am I. 2 And he said, Take now your son, your only son, whom you love, even Isaac, and get to the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt-offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell you of. 3 And Abraham rose early in the morning, and saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son; and he clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went to the place of which God had told him. 4 On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off. 5 And Abraham said to his young men, Stay here with the donkey, and I and the lad will go yonder; and we will worship, and come again to you. 6 And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took in his hand the fire and the knife; and they went both of them together. 7 And Isaac spoke to Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold, the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering? 8 And Abraham said, God will provide himself the lamb for a burnt-offering, my son: so they went both of them together.

9 And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built the altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar, upon the wood. 10 And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son. 11 And the angel of God called to him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I. 12 And he said, Lay not your hand upon the lad, do not do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me. 13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, behind him a ram caught in the thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt-offering in the stead of his son. 14 And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah-jireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of God it shall be provided. 15 And the angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time out of heaven, 16 and said, By myself have I sworn, said God, because you have done this thing, and have not withheld your son, your only son, 17 that in blessing I will bless you, and in multiplying I will multiply your seed as the stars of the heavens, and as the sand which is upon the seashore; and your seed shall possess the gate of his enemies; 18 and in your seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because you have obeyed my voice.

    Exodus 1

1 Now these are the names of the sons of Israel, who came into Egypt (every man and his household came with Jacob): 2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah, 3 Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin, 4 Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher. 5 And all the souls that are descendants of Jacob were seventy souls: and Joseph was in Egypt already. 6 And Joseph died, and all his brothers, and all that generation. 7 And the children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and waxed exceeding mighty; and the land was filled with them.

8 Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who knew not Joseph. 9 And he said to his people, Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we: 10 come, let us deal wisely with them, lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that, when there falls out any war, they also join themselves to our enemies, and fight against us, and get them up out of the land. 11 Therefore they did set over them taskmasters to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh store-cities, Pithom and Raamses. 12 But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and the more they spread abroad. And they were grieved because of the children of Israel. 13 And the Egyptians made the children of Israel to serve with rigor: 14 and they made their lives bitter with hard service, in mortar and in brick, and in all manner of service in the field, all their service, in which they made them serve with rigor.

15 And the king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, of whom the name of the one was Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah: 16 and he said, When you do the office of a midwife to the Hebrew women, and see them upon the birth-stool; if it is a son, then you shall kill him; but if it is a daughter, then she shall live. 17 But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the male children alive. 18 And the king of Egypt called for the midwives, and said to them, Why have you done this thing, and have saved the male children alive? 19 And the midwives said to Pharaoh, Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women; for they are lively, and are delivered ere the midwife come to them. 20 And God dealt well with the midwives: and the people multiplied, and waxed very mighty. 21 And it came to pass, because the midwives feared God, that he made them households. 22 And Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, Every son that is born you shall cast into the river, and every daughter you shall save alive.

    Exodus 18

13 And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses sat to judge the people: and the people stood about Moses from the morning to the evening. 14 And when Moses’ father-in-law saw all that he did to the people, he said, What is this thing that you do to the people? Why do you sit alone, and all the people stand
