Seeking an adventure, Callum Murphy and his friend, Marcus Goodman, are heading to the Gulf of Mexico to join the confederate army. Their quiet camp is interrupted by a lady’s scream. Eager to get away from temptation, she turns to leave and twists her ankle. The agonizing pain leaves her with the inability to walk. To avoid asking her in-laws for help, she offers Callum a place to stay if he’ll help with her farm’s chores.

Enamored with the lady, he discovers she has a few issues; crops to bring in from the fields, a sex starved brother-in-law, and a body which inflames his desire. One problem, however, worries him. Can he convince her to forget the other rascals in her life and give him a chance?

I can’t. Sadie Pepperman hated the whinny tone of her voice, but the endless responsibilities waiting for her at home doused her joy with doubts.

Why can’t I grab a moment of peace and forget the past?

Pictures flashed through her head of the day she’d met the man of her dreams. His charismatic charm and her impetuous nature had landed her in a marriage after only knowing him for a few days. Then, like all fantasies, reality had reared its head, leaving her alone with the burden of running their farm. While her husband gallivanted around the country doing what he damn well please until he ended up dead.

Come on, Sadie. Stepping out of her petticoats, Carolyn threw them into the wagon before she waded naked into the Trinity River. There’s no one around for miles. And I want to cool off.

Heat soaring into blistering temperatures, Sadie brushed back the wet tendrils sticking to the side of her face.
