Introduction
For a Christian, an understanding of spiritual maturity and its development in one’s life is, without a doubt, one of the most important elements of our faith. At the same time, it may be one of the most elusive.
I believe that virtually every person who names the name of Christ has a desire to become more spiritually mature. Having said that, I want to use this point to make an important distinction. While virtually every Christian wants to become more spiritually mature, very few are able to articulate specifically what that means or how to actually accomplish it. Going one step further, very few consistently, intentionally and aggressively act even on what they do know.
The purpose of this booklet is not to give you a higher level of spiritual maturity. No book or person can give that to you. Spiritual maturity is something that you have to develop for yourself individually by putting out great effort over the entire course of your life.
Honestly, by simply reading this booklet you will not achieve spiritual maturity. But if you are truly interested in actually becoming a more spiritually mature person, this booklet will give you guidance about how to begin and progress on that journey. Here you will find a definition of spiritual maturity along with its parameters. Additionally, you will find the things you must work on in your life to develop that maturity.
You will also not find here a comprehensive step by step roadmap for achieving your spiritual maturity. Again, there is guidance, but maturity is very personal. No book can give you something which must be worked out by each individual in daily life. What you will find is a catalog of the categories that you must grasp and the life issues you must work on in order to advance in your spiritual development. If you will commit yourself to spiritual growth and live in ways which develop these qualities in your life, you will begin to travel a road which will take you to increasingly higher levels of spiritual maturity.
How to Use this Booklet
This booklet is divided into thirty (30) segments. Each identifies a category that you need to consider as you contemplate your spiritual growth. The first part of each segment is a simple explanation of the category. It is only designed to identify the category so that you will realize that this is an area you need to work on. Over the course of your life, it would be very advantageous for you to do more comprehensive study in each of these areas so that your understanding grows deeper. But that is left to you. This booklet is only designed to get you started.
At the end of each segment is a suggestion as to how you can become intentional about your growth in that area. This suggestion is necessarily very generalized. It is not designed to tell you specifically what to do or how to do it. It is only a prompt to help you think more deeply about it. The reason for this approach is that everyone’s specific life situation is different, and no single suggestion can possibly apply to everyone. Even in your own life, your level of spiritual maturity will change over time along with the actions you need to take. A generalized suggestion is the only way to give you prompts that are flexible enough to stimulate your thinking no matter what your current level. But keep this one thought in mind: If you don’t take some action based on this suggestion, nothing will happen. You must do something!
Here is what I suggest. Begin by simply reading through the book once. This will give you a big picture look at spiritual maturity.
