About this ebook
**Book 2 of 3 in the Planet of Riches Trilogy**
The plan to get rid of Meredith went to hell quickly, resulting her escape and disappearance. Any and all efforts to find her had been for naught, increasing the frustration I’d already been feeling.
If that weren’t bad enough, my endless search for the Planet of Riches has led to a dead end, leaving me only one alternative: find another database to continue my search.
With a little digging, I found the Mega Database, which was firmly in the possession of the Planet Mafia, a huge mob I happened to have connections to.
All I had to do was come up with a plan that would convince the Planet Mafia into giving me access and I’d be home free. What could possibly go wrong?
**This is Book 2 of 3 in the Planet of Riches Trilogy and ends in a cliffhanger.**

Chapter 1
Meredith Oblinger.
The Planet of Riches.
My dual obsessions.
One I had no control over and would do anything to have end as I wanted.
The other, I had complete control over, but it still was just beyond my reach.
If selling my soul would have made each conclude as I wished, I’d have done it in a second. However, I’d learned it is never that simple. Even the best plans have holes and glitches.
Months had passed since Meredith’s gutsy escape from Ms. Blanc’s estate and I was still fuming. How could one woman, one horrid and slimy woman, get away from two dozen men in a gated trillionaire’s estate? I know the noxious smoke she set on Tego, my mafia friend’s man, and I stopped us, but where were the other guards? They were supposed to be on the lookout for her, have every conceivable exit and entrance covered. So how was she able to get away without any of them seeing?
This question plagued me as much as the nightmares of that fateful day. When I wasn’t concentrating or focused on something else, images of all the blunders, all the missed opportunities would come back to me.
I could be having the best day ever, and one unsuspecting thought of that day would ruin it.
I was haunted.
Yes, I know it sounds juvenile for a thirty year old to obsess like this, but she just triggered something in me I can’t stop. It’s like she was my archenemy and as the hero who protects the poor unsuspecting people around her, I had to rid the world of her evil presence.
And so far I’d been doing a horrible job protecting these people.
She’d gotten away from me and the people I’d hired to take her away twice. For me, that was two times too many.
That’s why I’d come to the conclusion that other than my search for the Planet of Riches, and staying in culinary graduate school for as long as I continued to get a free ride, I’d put everything I had left into finding Meredith.
To this end, I’d dedicated a computer whose sole task was searching for her. Every second of every day, it scanned surveillance videos, communications, passport photos, and every other form of identification which was used on every known planet in the universe, looking for her.
Yes, it was a lot of work, however I’d given the program specific parameters as to what to look for. As long as she didn’t try to pass herself off as a man or a child, I knew I’d find her sooner or later.
I just had to have patience and patience was something I’d been cultivating since I’d started searching for the Planet of Riches.
For those uniformed, the Planet of Riches is a mysterious, as of now unfound, planet which may or may not be mentioned in the ancient scrolls written by the Ancients, who supposedly found said planet.
Wait. You don’t know who the Ancients were?
The Ancients were only the most gloried, most technologically superior group of people living thousands of years ago. See, they were around, minding their own business, when a huge civil war broke out with the Anarchists, (the bad guys in case you couldn’t figure it out) and then disappeared.
Where’d they go?
That’s just as debated as where the Planet of Riches is and if it even exists.
Personally, I think the Ancients took off to the Planet of Riches because who wouldn’t want to go there? A planet with gems, gold, and silver all over the place…if I ever found it, I wouldn’t leave. Unless I left to sell some of the things I’d found…I’d have to think about that when I actually found the planet.
And every day I was getting closer. Since I’d started my search, I’d narrowed down the possibilities from ducentillions to about five tredecillion.
Yep, in no time I’ll be down to five or ten…and if you believe that I’ve got this planet to sell you at a great price.
To be very serious, however, if I didn’t think that sooner or later I’d find the planet, I’d never have started this search. It’s just that I never expected it to take so long or be so difficult.
Just like my quest to get rid of Meredith.
I sighed. Everything seemed to circle back to her, didn’t it?
And that was the problem, I thought glancing at my computer which was searching for her. Until I found some resolution in this matter, she’d always be in the back of my mind, like a parasite which you could never completely get rid of. What I needed was some type of surgery that would separate me from my parasite, but how did you cut away the leech if you didn’t know where it was?
Chapter 2
I was in a very opulent room.
The light blue carpet was so plush I wanted to sink my toes into it and never move again.
Along the walls, there were chaise lounge chairs with plush light blue pillows. They looked unmarred, as if they’d never even been sat on. Or even touched.
Why would someone have chairs if they never used them?
The walls were covered in gorgeous wallpaper, which was of a similar shade of light blue as the carpet and chairs.
As I looked closer, I saw that what I’d believed was pure, unmarred wallpaper in fact contained a subtle floral pattern to it. It was very pretty and incredibly detailed.
Who’d have thought someone would put so much thought as to what wallpaper would, and should, look like?
The longer I studied the devilish twists and turns of the pattern’s lines, the more I realized it looked familiar.
In fact, everything around me looked familiar.
Had I been here before?
It was on the tip of my tongue to say no when movement caught the corner of my eye. I turned my head to the left and saw a very beautiful woman wearing a light blue dress. Its silken fabric clung to every inch of her scrumptious body.
Ms. Blanc. The name was on the tip of my lips before I even realized I’d been thinking of it. Ms. Blanc, my trillionaire acquaintance who’d been there that day.
I studied her, somehow not really believing it was Ms. Blanc. Why would she be here, wherever here was.
The more I looked, the more I realized my first assessment was correct. Yes, that was Ms. Blanc and she was talking to someone.
Who?
I looked in the direction she was speaking, but I saw no one. Was she talking on the videophone?
I peered around the room. There was no phone…or any place to put one. What was going on?
Who was she talking to?
I took a step toward Ms. Blanc, intending to ask her that very question, when a little silver ball came rolling toward us.
It was a pretty ball, not much bigger than a golf ball, but where the dimples on a golf ball would have been there were instead curved lines. They reminded me of the curves on a tennis ball, but they were different somehow.
The ball ran into my foot and stopped. My first instinct was to bend down and pick it up. Something within me stopped my hand.
I shouldn’t touch it.
I should be getting as far from it as possible…but why?
It was just a little ball…wasn’t it?
The harmless little ball began to twitch like a bug having a seizure. The twitching became quite violent before two sides of the ball pulled away from the core.
Black smoke released into the room, spreading out faster than anything I’d ever seen.
I began coughing.
I couldn’t breathe!
It felt as if all the air in the room had been sucked out.
My head began to spin and my knees buckled, bringing me down to the ground. I could breathe a little better on the floor, but I couldn’t, no wouldn’t, last long without fresh air.
I dragged my suddenly heavy body across the floor toward the windows. If I could only reach them!
With every excruciating inch, I felt myself becoming weaker and weaker.
The black smoke was killing me.
My spirit very strongly wanted to live.
My flesh, my incredibly weak flesh, was telling me I couldn’t. That it couldn’t.
Just as all hope was leaving me, a breeze brushed my face. A breeze? My clouded mind cleared for a second to realize that fresh air was coming at me. Renewed with hope, I began crawling again. Salvation was just out of reach…if only I could grasp it!
And grasp it I did, my wheezing body gasping in the fresh air which was just on the other side of the threshold I’d come upon.
I paused for a moment, my body exhausted from the lack of oxygen.
I felt myself coming back to life, a life I didn’t want to end this way.
My toes and fingers, which had gone numb, now tingled and hurt. But the hurt was good, for without that pain, I’d never have known they were still attached and usable. Circulation reentered my legs and arms, making them feel less like dead limbs weighing me down.
I was about to start moving again, when something landed on my back, crushing me to the ground.
That glorious air which I’d been sucking up like an ice cream cone was gone. In its place was bone crunching pain.
But as fast as this agony came, it disappeared. What felt like an eternity of suffering was only a second or two. I lifted my head, the only thing I could move at this point, and saw a woman trying to maneuver over me.
She moved with no regard to me, her stiletto heel digging into my side with one of her steps. It felt as if she’d punctured me with a blade. I cried out when she ripped the heel out of me, the withdrawal worse than the entry.
I barely had the conscience of mind to move my hand in time or it would have been the next victim to this woman’s uncaring massacre.
As she passed by my prone and now bleeding body, I got a good look at her face. Recognition instantly hit me.
Meredith!
My enemy!
My foe!
She was getting away!
And by not moving, I was letting her!
Adrenaline flooded my body and mind, giving me the strength and resolve I’d been missing to get to my hands and knees…and after what felt like an eternity, my feet.
I swayed and thought I’d fall on my face in disgrace, but I didn’t give myself the option. I needed to stop Meredith before she got too far away from me.
I forced one foot to go in front of the next, somehow gaining on her. It felt like I was traveling at high speed while she was in the pull of a black hole, slowing her down so I had the chance to get to her.
Time appeared to equal out when I was within arm’s reach of her body, giving me only a single opportunity to grab her.
I reached out my hand and clawed at her blond, greasy hair, the only thing I’d be able to easily hold onto. As I got a hold on it, I felt as if I’d plunged my hand into a can of oil. I felt repulsed, but I held on the best I could with my hand slipping and sliding.
I couldn’t get a firm grip so I tried to wrap the strands around my fist, tugging on her hair as I did.
This got her attention because she turned her head toward me. I’d barely seen her hate filled face before I felt her fist hit the side of my head. I swayed as I tried to stay on my unsteady feet.
The hand holding the strands released its grip just enough for them to slide away from me.
My hand turned into a claw as I tried to regrasp her hair, but she didn’t let up her attack on me. For every blocked blow, she landed two or three.
When had she turned into a master martial artist?
My attention drifted for just a second.
It was enough for her to deal a crippling blow. A stiletto blade into the stomach had me folding over like a piece of paper turned into origami.
A fist to the back of my head put me onto the ground.
I fought to regain my footing even as I realized how fruitless it would be. I couldn’t win against the kung fu queen.
If I just laid down and admitted defeat…I’d be giving up. I couldn’t give up! I’d been through too much.
With renewed spirit, I stood on my wobbly feet and took a few steps toward Meredith’s fleeing form.
She must have heard me, because she looked back at me, alarm on her face. Even as she continued to run, she put her hand into her pocket and dropped something.
The rolling ball captured my attention and stopped me in my tracks. This ball looked exactly like the one which had produced the noxious black smoke, except this one was red.
I took a few steps back, frantically looking for cover. I didn’t care about Meredith anymore. If she wanted to leave, she could leave. However I wanted nothing to do with this newest surprise.
The ball kept rolling toward me, shadowing my movements as if it had locked onto my life signature and decided it wanted to follow me. I kept running backwards as fast as I could, zigging and zagging, but it did no good.
That damn ball continued to follow me, stalking me as a leopard stalks her prey.
I don’t know how long we played this game, me retreating, it following, but I eventually ended up pinned to a hedge.
The stinging nettled branches dragged along my body, injecting me with their toxic sludge. This pain was preferable to the red little ball, which was now about a foot away from me.
I moved back more into the stinging cradle of the shrub barrier, wishing it would produce an escape from my pursuer.
Instead, it came to life. Its tentacle branches wrapped around me like octopus arms, constricting me like a boa constrictor. I fought and flailed, trying to free myself from this newest threat but I was too late. It had me firmly within its grasp and wasn’t going to let me go.
The more I thrashed about, the tighter within its grasp I became. And the less air I could inhale.
Why was I being killed?
What had I ever done to this seemingly nice shrub?
Or was it just holding me?
This thought came to me as I finally gave up fighting. The arms released their grip a little. I couldn’t breathe as freely as I’d have liked, but at least some oxygen was making its way inside of me.
When my eyes could refocus again, I noticed that the horrid little red ball was now only inches away from me, using the shrub’s distraction to get closer.
My first instinct was to run, to fight, to kick, but I couldn’t; the shrub saw to that. I was at the mercy of this little ball.
What horrors did it intend to unleash upon me? Would I survive or would I die cursing it and Meredith to my grave?
The ball began to shudder and shake, then bounce. It started bouncing only a few inches in the air, but gradually came to knee height.
And then waist height.
And then as tall as me.
I watched in horror as it soon eclipsed my height, going up as high as ten or twelve feet, all the while buzzing and making other little noises.
It reminded me of a jumping bean gone out of control. Perhaps the center of it was a jumping bean. What else could explain this ball’s abnormal behavior?
The buzzing and beeping and shrieking became louder and more violent. It now sounded as if someone were torturing this tiny ball. As much as I didn’t enjoy it terrorizing me, I didn’t want it to be similarly harassed.
I felt a tiny grain of pity for this little red ball, but this disappeared within seconds of engraining itself into my soul.
The tortured ball had finally stopped jumping up and down and making those noises. In its place, it burst into flames. Flames which surrounded me on three sides like unscalable walls.
The heat was intense, so powerful and concentrated, I worried my skin would melt off.
I shrunk back into the shrub, my foe now my protector. The flames continued to inch closer to me.
My vision only saw the raging flames, flames which were now flickering toward me, as if they wanted to brand me or make me a part of them.
I started screaming, pleading for someone to help.
Did someone reply to my pleas?
How would I know?
I was being burned alive!
The flames!
The agonizing pain!
Chapter 3
The Ancients by Umut Valentine Maja Adolfs, chapter one.
(Umut Valentine Maja Adolfs is a closet linguist who has had several papers published in the Linguist Today academic journal and has had some of his findings authenticated by the leaders in the linguist field. When not working on his translations and studying ancient languages, Adolfs is a computer programmer at the prestigious company Hilfax-Straghenburg-Winter.)
"When one speaks of the people commonly known as ‘The Ancients,’ they are in all actuality referring to the people who called themselves the Meditorium. For the sake of this book, however, and the ease of the reader, we shall continue to refer to them as the Ancients, as this is the common practice of many generations of peoples.
"Before we get into an in depth exploration of the Ancients’ history, let us briefly explore from whence their self given name came from.
"The word ‘meditorium’ comes from the old Vetu word ‘meditoria’ which means ‘to study or think over.’ The Ancients took this word and added the suffix ‘ium’ to the Vetu word to make ‘meditorium,’ which I’ve translated to mean ‘The People of Great Thought.’
"Other scholars have speculated this word is from the Iuven word ‘medita’ which means ‘wise’ or ‘those of profound wisdom.’ While this is a viable possibility, and would enhance our current translation as to what their self given name means, I do not think the Ancients would have taken an Iuven word over the highly venerated people we know the Vetu were.
"In addition, since it is believed by almost every scholar that the very beginnings of the
