Prologue
If you are reading this, you may have attended one of my seminars. You may be a student of psychology. Or you may have begrudgingly picked up a copy, because your partner has been begging you to bring some emotional intelligence into your life. I speak on many topics, and one that I am most passionate about is emotional intelligence.
The text in these pages includes thoughts drawn from my 50 or so years of experience as a son, brother, student, athlete, employee (public and private), employer, partner, entrepreneur, business owner, attorney, mediator, author, professor, father, boyfriend, ex-boyfriend, divorcé, consultant, and speaker.
The concepts presented in this book are not scientifically proven; I am not a psychologist, psychiatrist, or other MD (although I have stayed in a Holiday Inn Express). These ideas and methods have served me well over time. But at the outset, please know that to achieve any significant results requires a commitment; it is a constant journey and a process that must continue throughout one’s life.
I cannot take credit for all (or even most) of these concepts. In the suggested reading list, you will find books and resources that deserve the credit for inspiring me or making me go hmmm… These resources and their authors merit recognition, if not for the concepts themselves, then for the inspiration or foundation for the concepts included here. Additionally, I have been fortunate in my life to know many people—some professional counselors, others just ordinary folks—who were all willing to share with me some guidance and lessons that they learned on their journeys. Thanks to all of you for showing me the path to peace, contentment, and
