CHAPTER ONE: A CALL FROM CHASE

Wind rushed through my dark hair as I stepped off of the train platform in downtown San Francisco. The city was alive around me, pulsing with a heartbeat quick enough to match my own.

It was two years after my graduation from college. I was a fresh-faced, eager, young woman of twenty four, who a week earlier, had had no idea about this trip. Chase had called me, asking if I was free for one of our visits. He was traveling to California on business and was inviting me to stay with him at his new seaside estate for a while.

As usual, my dear, you don’t have to worry about tickets. Just tell me the dates you’ll be able to come, and I’ll book you through. The plane will be waiting.

Despite any of my protestations, he always insisted on sending his own private plane. Chase Harrison was never stingy with his money, preferring to spend it making others’ lives easier than his own life overly lavish. My graduate student wallet seemed to audibly yawn its emptiness at his offer.
