Three Simple Rules for Talking to Boys
Here’s the thing about Ryan: there was nothing wrong with him. That’s to say there was nothing about him that should make me run screaming with my arms waving. He was smart and sweet and always nice. Heck, he was even cute in a guy-with-glasses-who-reads-a-lot-of-books kind of way. And he was totally in love with me (Okay, maybe ‘love’ is stretching it, but he had a first class case of the hots for me, enough said). Yeah, his affection made me feel good about myself, I won’t lie. You’re probably wondering, though: if he had so many good things going for him, why wouldn’t I go on a date with him?
I didn’t get it either. Not totally. Since coming out as a freshman, I’d had a couple of boyfriends, but nothing serious. They all turned out to be cheats and sleazes and slime balls and I’m glad I found out what they were really like before I got too involved.
I knew Ryan was hot for me from the way he looked at me. Nothing says I like you (or I wanna jump your bones) better than shooting constant glances in a guy’s direction. But, if he really wanted to go out with me, why didn’t he come right out and say so?
As it turned out, Ryan set out to change all that. He cornered me in the hall near the vending machines, but it was like he’d poured all his energy into approaching me and had nothing left in the tank to spit the words out and finish the job.
I’ve learned Three Simple Rules for Talking to Boys since coming out. Wanna hear them? Sure you do!
Rule number one: look the boy in the eyes. Don’t just let your head droop like you want to cower away or wish you could be anywhere else. It’s not that stressful. When Ryan cornered me, he had my attention, which is great, but he didn’t know what the hell to do with it.
