Devil's Crossing - Alan Stanford
Dust to Dust

Wiping the sweat from my face. I was shifting my weight from one foot to another like an anxious child waiting for the church bell to ring.
Raising my hand, I tried to block the glare.
However, the only thing I blocked was the breeze that gave me some kind of reprieve from the heat.
God it must be over a hundred degrees in this god-forsaken town I thought.
Devils Crossing
I am beginning to regret even stopping here, but a cowboy has to work and a man has to eat.
That might be the reason I came through town but not I stayed.
She was the prettiest thing I had ever seen.
In addition, I could not keep my eyes off her, with her green eyes and dark hair and that smile it just made me weak in the knees.
Mary, was her name and I did not care she sang in a saloon.
Hell, I did not care where she was from or anything, I just wanted to be with her.
I’d been thinking of settling down for some time and now the urge was even stronger now that I found the one.
The trail drives, eating chuck, tasting dust day in and day out was getting old, my plan all along was to build up my money reserve, find a place with good water and grass, buy some cattle stock, horses and build me a nice home.

I could use my savings to build a home right there on the Ranch so that they could stay right where they belong.
Ever since I met Mary, my imagination has been running wild with what I’d do to the old Ranch, yea there was plenty to do with it since Pa couldn’t do a lot anymore.
I thought we could build the ranch back up together have kids and grow old together.
Who knows! But first I had to get outta this heat..
I walked back to the shade of the general store as I felt a bead of sweat rolling down my spine….
This was about the only relief, I’m going to get from the sun, I thought
Mary was put off at first but I kept talking to her about my dreams and the Ranch that I had waiting for me in a little place called Idaho.
I guess finally she saw I wasn't a bad guy not like those other drinkers and gamblers that hung out here.
She told me about her life, her dreams and how she ended up at Devil's Crossing.
She had been traveling to Dodge City with a touring group of actors putting
