Darkest Willow - Eric Thornton
Chapter 1
Mason stood no further than five feet from his back door. The colors of the sky seemed to dance across the glass on the door. Beauty had implanted itself into his heart. He sat down on his deck and looked at the sunset sky. His mind seemed to forever brand this image into his brain. He hoped that someday he would have a husband at his side. A man that he could kiss, hug, and feel comfortable around. A man that would look into his eyes and be honest no matter what. But he wouldn't find it. Not in my lifetime, he thought.
His heart sank as he absorbed the moment though it was missing one key ingredient. He leaned his head against the railing of the steps. He took in the warmth of the sun. The beauty of the warm colors filling the sky. As he stared at the sunlight, he could feel his heart breaking. This was a once in a lifetime experience and he had no one to share it with. No man at his side. His heart sank and tears began to trail down his cheeks.
This world that he lived in was cruel, harsh, and unforgiving. He wanted to be forgiven for the past. He wanted happiness to find its way back into him. He ran his fingers through his short blond hair and wiped the tears from his cheeks. There was no reason to put himself through this. This was no laughing matter. It was a matter of the heart. It was all he could do to not kill himself. When the thought about it, he had gone through so much hell to kill more than fifty people.
Death was not his favorite thing. He wanted love to be but he had to find it first. He had to get it. But when he thought about it while straightening his shorts, he did not need to put himself through more hell looking for love. Someone had once told him to stop looking for it. That it would find him when the time was right.
He let out a heavy sigh and stood up. At six foot one, two hundred pounds, and a heavy heart, he knew this day would have to end soon. He needed to do some writing before the day was done. He needed to feel that security. To write what he had dreamt about the night before. It was another chapter in one of his romance novels. His paranormal romance novels. For a writer of age twenty two, he had found it to be quite therapeutic.
Mason walked into the house, the sound of his flip flops smacking his feet echoing in his ears. He didn’t care though. He kicked them aside gently and walked over to his laptop. It was time for chapter nineteen of his latest novel. He sat down, exhaling a small sigh, and read the last two sentences he had written. After a moment of silence to collect his thoughts, he started typing. Line after line seemed to appear on the page.
The small cursor on his computer danced along the lines. Replacing the cursor were words that he was now inserting onto the page. Page after page seemed to fly by. He clicked he mouse a few times, causing a page break and the start of a few new chapters. His breathing seemed mellow. His heart remained low in his chest. His mind was slowly arriving at ease. His chest rose and fell in a constant beat. His heart never raced. It remained consistent.
It was as though someone was telling him what they wanted to happen. To him, that was all writing was. People walking into his mind, pointing out the person they wanted, and how they wanted to find the person of their dreams. His writing never specified what sexuality he wrote about. He had written love stories of lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and straight people. He had no preference for writing them but he did slightly favor writing the gay romance novels.
Chapter 2
Son of a bitch. Reyes stood before his boss, facing the consequences of his actions. He did not want to lose his job. He didn’t want to listen to the lecture of being a good person. He had listened to it one too many times. He couldn’t hold back his expelled choice of words. It needed to happen. They had worked their way up his throat and out of his mouth.
Quit dancing around the fucking subject. If you are going to fire me, then fire me damn it. Otherwise I’m walking out of here and will be getting back to work,
Reyes said.
His boss’s eyes lit up and fury seemed to build inside him. Reyes listened as every foul word in the dictionary was thrown at him. He felt no need to continue listening to this load of bullshit. He set his gun, badge, and his gear in front of the boss and walked out of the office. He walked to this desk, gathered his contents, and left the building.
Ten years of hard work and busting his ass for a nine hundred dollar paycheck was gone. His life would no longer be centered around shit like that. Damn, he thought. I cannot handle that
