Dek
Fine. I'll leave all that matters to me to come with you for the sake of my dear sister's feelings. Are we happy now?
Jorn leaned back in the thin chair he'd been provided with, tugging the worn blanket Koioh had given him more tightly around himself under Dek's unimpressed regard. A scowl flashed his face, but he shook it off after a minute, probably realizing how childish it made him look.
The orimyr leaned against the wall with a sigh, already tired of Jorn's theatrics.
Is that really why you've decided to join us? The fact that we'll be saving your tail from Sashen's wrath doesn't have the slightest thing to do with it?
Dek's expression was grim looking over Liyelu's spoiled brat brother. If it were up to him, the tedium of the present moment wouldn't have ever become a part of the equation. It was clear to him that Jorn would find a way to crawl back to the tanks for whatever it was they were using to entice him into service.
Just as comfortable as ever to debase his own kind.
Dek found it disgusting at best, but he'd made a promise that he wouldn't leave Jorn behind in the tanks, and he'd kept it.
Don't go anywhere,
he told the ornery mer, sparing him a glance before turning to the door of the only rented Blinktown rooms Koioh could secure with such short notice.
Wouldn't dream of it,
Jorn replied with a tone that told Dek he had no intention of making things easy.
*
Dek lifted the simmer brew Koioh had the presence of mind to have prepared, no doubt having spotted the fires threatening to spill out from the irritation burning within him. He shouldn't allow Jorn to get under his skin the way he did. Truthfully, the lead on the Gentleman's Tank
probably wouldn't have popped up for some time if Jorn hadn't left the sanctuary of Kimshi's lagoons and attracted the continued aid of his sister.
There was certainly more than one way to look at things.
It was hard to view it as a victory, but Liyelu would be relieved to know he'd passed the Aio's health scan. It was difficult rounding up the outlying members of the council on such short notice, but they were very glad to help Dek these days. There'd been more successes than failures identifying and infiltrating the townships the rogues had been not-so-quietly establishing.
Dek had worked hard to ensure it, and his dedication hadn't gone unnoticed.
He was thankful for that.
The dark elf took a long drought of the simmering brew, his attention set on the information gathering sessions unfolding. They'd recovered a small variety of mer from the tank who weren't completely gone mentally. How useful they would prove to be was still uncertain.
The most vocal was a former sewer agent, a member of one of the less favored families Sashen had ordered to keep watch in the city. She'd apparently jumped at the chance to join Pel, ready to take at least a step up from the lowliest of spy positions to that of a performer.
At least, a potentially new and vibrant future had been painted that way to entice her.
She'd come to see the reality of what she'd signed up for relatively early into her recruitment and had yet to accept the rogue's magikal brand. The corrupt magicians swiftly demoted her as a result.
The dream maker the guarding circle recovered was a bit less vocal, but she agreed to identify the rogues running the tank if it meant her identity would be kept confidential. The guiding seat could only do so much to ensure the safety of the mer who were helping them piece things together, but they had ways of helping new histories rise up to replace less desirable ones for those they considered allies.
The mer seated in front of Koioh's team were glad for the offer. The alternative to a fresh start was unthinkable. Gaining their cooperation was easy, and the council had anticipated as much. The mer from previous tanks had similar dispositions and reactions.
They'd been positioned with their backs against the wall, and they were desperate for solutions. The rogues might think themselves clever, but they had failed to win the loyalty of their reluctant underlings.
At first opportunity to jump ship, they had.
Those who snatch power rarely understand how foolish it is to rub those they consider weak
the wrong way. Power is relative and often mutable. As the tables had turned now, it was the underling mers of the Gentleman's Tank
who held the key to their own fates.
Some of the rogues would certainly get away, but others would fall into capture, be demagiked, gleaned for whatever information could be gained, and thrown out with the trash, empty and bereft of allegiance as they started their new lives with whatever anonymity they could snatch for themselves.
Dek drew a deep, calming breath, and took another sip of his brew.
They were doing good work here.
And even if this was the exact opposite of what Jorn wanted, he'd inadvertently helped the guarding circle draw power from the fiends attempting to break the other folk with debased magiks stolen from whomever they could find to drain.
He'd give thanks for it, and force the previous irritating run-in with the short-sighted mer directly from his mind.

Hey,
Dek greeted, his gaze deepening at the sight of Liyelu.
He wasn't sure what to expect from her now, but the motivations for her actions were much clearer this time around. He'd almost known she would run after her brother, and it hadn't felt like
