Digital Wildfires - Thejendra Sreenivas
Preface
Hey, are you interested in ending horrible things like racism, prejudice, discrimination, bigotry, xenophobia, antisemitism, colonialism, etc., on our planet?
Yes, of course.
How about vanquishing evil dictators and cruel despotic regimes?
Sounds delicious.
And how about bringing big bad companies and their mighty CEOs to their knees?
Sure.
And do you want to make a nasty politician resign and disappear into oblivion?
Of course.
And did you know you can do all these sitting right in your home or office?
Wow! Really? How is that possible?
Simple. Just start a personal blog, and then get an account on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, YouTube, etc.
How will that help? I don’t see the connection.
They are your modern weapons to become a great Social Justice Warrior and make the world a better place to live.
I still don’t understand what you are talking about.
Digital Hooliganism
If you were a humble peasant living in medieval times and your village was ruled by an evil king it was almost impossible to chase him out of his fort. And in case you still wanted to get rid of him then you had to start a secret uprising and invade the fort with a trustworthy bloodthirsty mob. But there was always a big risk of you botching up the rebellion, getting caught by the king’s soldiers and getting yourself beheaded, or thrown to the lions, or into a cold dark dungeon and disappearing forever. Remember, how difficult it was for Mel Gibson to get rid of the evil king in the film Braveheart?
Fortunately, things have vastly improved now and there is no need for you to go through all such risks and hassles if you want to overthrow your local politician, squeal on a coworker, overthrow some CEO, or bring down an evil dictator in some faraway country, or even ruin the life of a complete stranger with no connection to you. Today, it is very easy to destroy your own life or someone’s life with just a few words and a click of a mouse button.
Want to know how? Just look at the case of Ms. Justine Sacco, who was a PR executive at a company called InteractiveCorp in 2013. Just before boarding a flight from London to South Africa, she posted a tweet on Twitter like, ‘Going to Africa. Hope I don’t get Aids. Just kidding, I am white!’
To a casual observer, this is just one of the millions of allegedly offensive things that people say or exist on the internet, and nobody would have remembered this comment a few minutes later. But on this particular day lady luck had decided
