About this ebook

The poetry of Northern California artist Marques Vickers explores the inspirations behind eros, aphrodesia and existence in his 300+ poem compilation recorded over thirty-five years.

“I spend my life ripping the skin off of words, exploring and hoping...” Succinct expression capsules Northern California artist Marques Vickers’ poetic work “Unicorns and Dark Chocolate”

Vickers sheds the mythological orientations behind his own formation into a cohesive exploration of inspiration and eroticism. As he the painter must lift his brush to express visually, he the poet must elevate language beyond the evident and obvious.

By examining his own-mirrored reflections, Vickers navigates an elemental path amidst the chaos of existence. He attempts to pierce through our subconscious surface to reveal the wellspring behind our thoughts and actions.

Art is romance, romance is art. His transparency of thought becomes his instrument for transfiguration. His language remains as concise and distinct as his tinted palette.

    UNICORNS

    INSPIRATION

    FORMATION

    LIFE AND MUSING

    DARK CHOCOLATE

    i do not love singularly

the act of love is duality

    multiplicity

the soul too vast a continent

    to encase the heart

    i am fidel to love

fidel to its twain and twinned

    ###

i must gently reject this tie

    that binds

    imprisoning band

    soldered by good intention

    i must refuse

    your strangulation

much as you may wish well

    my demise

    i can offer language

a peppery tongue oriented to season

    your blandness of existence

    but never the prospect

    of accepting

    a candied coated prison

    as its price tag

    ###

A day, year before my death

    the distance closes

    one hand traces a circle

    the fragile sphere of feeling

    the lightened breath of love

    heightened desire

    floating like a cloud

    amidst stilled fountains flow

    profound crystalline waters

    as the world i entered

    outside your window

    your opened tunnel

    was my heart so hard

    so clear

    as the forged diamond

    you viewed

    ###

    deep in the heart

    of longings far removed

    one discovers galaxies

    fragments of what once

    illuminated

and when my eyes are shut

i witness the light in your own

    traveling on an adjacent highway

    amidst the darkness

    ###

i raise your flower to my lips

    petals spread, moist, red

    lost, disoriented, drowning

    existing in scent

    existing but you

    a flowers fragrance

    flawed in perfection

    ###

    why speak of love

    when but distance

    when only time

    bridges a chasm by circumstance

    a gulf which time adheres

    which time ignores

    why speak of love

    when sorrow knocks

    to the response of circumstance

    why speak of love

    when it devours all

    ###

one does not question the sea

    or why an imprint

    remains imbedded

    in memory

    one does not question love

    or its hallucination

    if only a glimpse

    one lives

    awaiting its return

    ###

    woman divorcee abandoned

    to the artlessly changed

    rules of lovemaking

    bound and captive

    into decades of matrimony

    she emerges free

    ill-prepared for the evolving etiquette

    of pursuit

    the empty ardor

    of distracted suitors

    ###

    night passes to daylight

    darkness lifts

    the veil of disclosure

    mi corazón

    my heart lingers

    over the solitude of goodbyes

    without farewell

    sacred sensuality

    entombed amidst cathedrals

    of memory

    ###

    while you slumber

    let us speak

    on the river of love

    which one would surely

    drown

    without resistance

    ###

    raging bloom

    of the dormant flower

draw me into her kissing sips

    furnace soul

    who may resist

    not i

    a mere pilgrim

    solitary soldier

    who guards the flame

    of sacred surrender

    ###

    i am near

    yet so far

    from the laughter

    of your distant voice

    it speaks

    in a language

    i have known

    all of my life

    waiting

    for each whisper

    to enter my ear

    ###

    forgive my intrusion

    into the carefully constructed decorum

    of respect and distance

    between us

    the door was ajar

    enabling my entrance

    ###

    lost in thought

    a world

    where a fleeting memory

    becomes flesh

    i in you

    you in i

    locked in a summit

    expectation

    severed only

    by the absence of time

    ###

    like making love

    images immortalized

    fasten like tentacles

    to our remnants

    of memory

    throughout time

    ###

    oh desired one

in the calm of our shared serene evening

    your whispered laughter

    washes my soul

as a wave deigned by Allah

    i inhale the perfume

    of your skin

    destined or my nostrils

    only in close proximity

    solely by you

    ###

was it so very long ago

a slight brush with your skin

    ignited

    A detonation of desire

    torch passed to memory

    fleeting but never far

    from the muse

    of an average day

    are we really so distant

    divided

when the aroma of your voice

    seasons my dreary diet

    of reminiscence

    inaccessible longing

    ###

    i know love

    as abstraction

    long resolved

    abandon is youthful indiscretion

    mansions of cards

    poised to fall

    i offer

    less

    a lower ceiling

    torch in a darkened cave

    ###

    did you

    feel my touch

    such amidst evening's shadow

    my legs

    wrapped around

like a ribbon to a present

    present tense

    fever i cannot shake

    smiling, inhaling your perfume

    restraint not in my vocabulary

    distant
