Sheri had never spent much time thinking about soldiers going off to war. She hardly even knew any soldiers. Sheri worked as a software engineer for a NASA contractor, whose building was located on the local army arsenal. She didn’t live in a complete bubble when it came to world events. She had known a couple of people who had been in Desert Storm, but it wasn’t something that had affected her personally and she didn’t keep up with the news on it.

Sheri had a lot of free time on her hands. On weekdays she worked from nine to five and then went home and did nothing. On weekends, she was an avid hiker and reader, doing most of her reading on a mountain trail somewhere. Life was good and what was going on in the Middle East had little to do with her, even after the towers were taken out by crazy terrorists. It was sad, but Alabama was a long way away from New York.

Sheri also suffered from insomnia. She spent late hours online in chat rooms just people watching. She didn’t really get involved with the nonsense she saw there, but it was funny to watch late at night when you couldn’t sleep and needed company, even if the company wasn’t that great.

One night, there was a group of young men with the screen name armyoffive. They were in the room talking with random folks and claiming that they were in Iraq in the communications hub. This seemed highly unlikely to Sheri. She had them pegged for some loser kids in their Mom’s basement.

Much to her surprise, she saw a message pop up from the screen name she had just been wondering about. It was a guy named Paul. He claimed to be a Master Sergeant with the US Army out of Warner Robins, Georgia. Doubting that anyone that had just deployed to a war was sitting in a chat room, Sheri was about to say so when she also received an invitation to a webcam. Still expecting to see some punk teenager mooning her, she clicked OK and was surprised to see a man in his mid-thirties’ with a buzz cut and fatigues looking into the cam.

He looked tired but the fatigue was lost behind the most breathtaking blue eyes she had ever seen. She wasn’t sure why this soldier had messaged her but she was in awe of both the fact that she could converse with someone in a war zone and the fact that the someone in question was absolutely beautiful, if you were allowed to apply that description to a grown man. She looked down at the message on her screen.

It said, I’m Paul. There are 5 of us that use this same ID, so unless the cam is on, you could be talking to someone else. Just thought I’d get that out of the way before saying that you’re very funny. I was reading your comments in the room and it was good to laugh. I looked at your profile and it seems you are beautiful as well as witty.

Thanks, she replied. "I don’t get how you are online. I thought all of you guys were sleeping out in tents in the middle of a dust bowl
