For Soccer-Crazy Girls Only - Erin Downing
INTRODUCTION
To be a great soccer player, you must be in love with the game. —Mia Hamm
DO YOU LOVE lacing up your cleats for the first game of the season—and do you love it even more when they’re caked with mud after the game? Are there many nights when you dream about kicking the ball, watching as it soars through the air toward the goal? Would your perfect day include hours on the soccer field? Do you love to watch people play, soaking up everything you can from other soccer-crazy players? Have you ever felt like your soccer team is a second family? Then you’re definitely soccer-crazy … and this book is definitely for you!
Soccer—also called football or fútbol—is the best and most popular sport in the world. (But I bet you already know that, don’t you?) Almost everyone on earth plays soccer at some point in his or her life. People love soccer not just because it’s fun—it’s also a sport that can be played almost anywhere, so it’s easy to get a game going anytime. In fact, many people use plastic bags, bottles, anything, to make a ball. All you need is something to kick around, an open patch of ground, and a friend (or a few) and you’re good to go.
I still remember the first professional soccer match I ever attended. I was living in England, and after many months of watching English Premier League matches on TV with my roommates, a good friend offered to take me to a Liverpool game. I distinctly remember the passion of the fans in the stadium, and the amazing level of play I saw on the field (which they call a pitch in England). I’d never seen soccer like that, and I felt incredible wearing my friend’s Liverpool jersey and getting swept up with the rest of the crowd in the thrill of the game. Afterward, we went to the fish and chips shop outside the stadium and cheered for our team with everyone else who swarmed into the streets … and I felt like I was a part of something important. That’s what soccer does for people: It builds a community and gives you something amazing to believe in. Soccer is all about the power of a team, the power of every player, natural and practiced talent, and the beauty of the game.
I’ve always loved soccer, and if you’re reading this book, I’m guessing you do, too. Inside, you’ll find everything you’ll ever need or want to know about soccer: fun and strange facts, interesting information about soccer all over the world, training tips to help make you a soccer superstar, and plenty of details about some of the most extraordinary and influential players who ever played the game. This isn’t a regular book that needs to be read from front to back. You can start anywhere, and read any section that catches your eye in whatever order you like.
In addition to reading dozens of books and visiting hundreds of websites while I was trying to find the best information to include in For Soccer-Crazy Girls Only, I also got great advice and feedback from some very helpful soccer-crazy friends. Dr. Mike Navarre is the head women’s soccer coach at Augsburg College in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and he had some extra insights for soccer-crazy girls—you’ll find helpful advice and suggestions from Coach Mike throughout the book.
So now dig in to discover absolutely everything you’ve ever wanted to know about your favorite sport!
For many soccer-loving girls, the game is all about having a good time—and that’s exactly what it should be about!
Most people play soccer because it’s the greatest sport in the world, and it’s a ton of fun. If you enjoy soccer just because you like getting together to practice or play with a group of friends who you have a great time with, that’s awesome.
But some soccer-crazy girls want more than just fun—they want to be one of the best. So what are some of the steps that a good soccer player can take to become a great soccer player? To be good, you must love to play. That’s obvious. The more you enjoy playing soccer, the more often you will play—and, of course, practice (tons and tons of practice), which makes you better. Taking the time to master your sport will make you a much stronger player and will probably lead to you loving soccer even
