Watching from The Cloud

雲の上より

Hey, Talia? Is that a new app? 「ねぇタリア、それ新しいアプリ？」

Tenshi looked over his classmate’s shoulder and saw that she was engrossed in her video stream. 同級生の肩越しに覗くと、どうやら熱中しているものはビデオストリームのようだ。 How’s she doing down there? 「彼女、元気にやってる？」テンシだって下界の様子を知りたい。 I’ve been worried about her too, you know. 「僕だって心配しているんだよ」

Go away. 「あっちに行ってて」全くうるさいったらありゃしない。美人だけど恐いガブリエラ先生が戻ってくるまでの貴重な休み時間なのだ、ちょっとは放っておいて欲しい。

I want to watch this before the headmistress comes back, so go away. Scoot. Go back to your textbook. 「先生が戻るまでに見ておきたいから、あっちに行って復習でもしてなさいよ」

The new kid was all over her like a little tail-wagging puppy, even during her break. 授業中だろうと休み時間だろうと、新入りの元少年はおかまいなしにタリアに付きまとう。その純真な目としつこさはまるで子犬のようである。いや、違うか。

Puppies are cute. This former 12-year-old boy who’s been named Tenshi is almost as bad as a stalker. 子犬なら可愛いが、元12歳のこのテンシと命名された坊やはストーカー並みである。

Aw, come on, I want to see, too. 「そんなこと言わないで、僕にも見せてよ」

Talia knew he’d keep bugging her about it anyway, so she moved back a fraction and allowed him to get a glimpse of her screen. どうせうるさく邪魔をし続けるに違いない。タリアは仕方なく、少しだけ後ろに下がって画面を覗かせてやった。

It looks like she still has a mad crush on Derek down there. 「まだデレクにお熱のようよ」

「え～？ 下の世界に行ってもまだあいつに夢中なの？」 Tenshi made a face. Yuck. 「げっ。大体あいつのせいでタリアは雲の上から追放されたんだったよね？」 He’s the reason why she got expelled. Isn’t she ever going to learn? 「ったく学習能力がないんだから」

It’s true love, Tenshi, and perfectly fine now that she’s just an average human teenager. そう、これは純愛なのだ。今や普通の十代の女の子になった彼女が、他の人間に恋をしても問題はないのである。

Then why isn’t she doing something about it? 「じゃあどうして何もしないんだよ？」 It’s frustrating seeing Angie twiddling her thumbs like that. 何もせずにただ手をこまねいているアンジーを見てテンシのイライラはつのるばかりだった。

That girl Angela she merged with? She was never interested in boys before, and it’s Angie’s first time to fall in love, too, so it’s not like she’s suddenly going to turn into a seductress. 異性に興味などなかったお転婆娘のアンジェラと融合し、その上アンジーにとっても初恋なのだからいきなり積極的になどなれる訳がない。

She—oops. 「彼女は――おっと」

Before Talia could finish what she was saying, a light breeze blew into the open-air classroom and the light sound footsteps could be heard. 教室に柔らかなそよ風が吹き込み、かすかな足音が聞こえてきた。ガブリエラ先生が戻ってきた。

It’s Mother Gabriella! Quick, open your textbook! 「テンシ、早く！」

「急いで教科書を開いてったって・・・」

「急いで席に戻って！」 Quick, get back to your seat!

タリアがそう言ったと思った次の瞬間に扉が開いた。

The door opened the moment after Talia told Tenshi to return to his seat. A middle-aged beauty stepped into the room carrying a stack of books in her arms. 両手に本を抱えた中年の美女が現れ、軽く咳払いをしてからタリアからテンシへと視線を送った。

The woman cleared her throat before glancing knowingly from Talia to Tenshi.

"Slacking off again, were you? 「またさぼっていたのですか？」音楽の旋律のように軽やかな声とは裏腹に鋭い眼差しは二人の生徒を見透かしているようだ。

The two students looked up innocently from their open books. As they were unable to lie to Gabriella, they kept their mouths shut. ガブリエラに嘘をつくことなど出来ないのだから仕方あるまい。口をつぐむ他ないのはいつものことだ。テキストとノートを開いて無言で必死に無実を訴えてみた。

It’s funny how your pages are opened to completely different sections of your textbook. 「そんな顔をされてもねえ。あら、どうして二人ともテキストの全く違うところにページを開いているのかしら？ まさかまたタブレットで人間界を覗いていたというようなことはありませんよね？」

「あら？ これは何かしら？」

The headmistress sauntered over and stared at the device Talia had tried to hide under her textbook. ガブリエラはタリアの席の後ろへとゆっくりと歩み寄り、教科書の下に隠されたタブレットを見つけ、大きく溜息をついた。

She sighed. 「タリア、何度いえば分かるのかしら？ あなたはね、――おおっ！」

With a sharp intake of breath, Gabriella raised a hand to cover her eyes. ガブリエラは一瞬息を止め、無意識に目を手で覆った。鮮やかな閃光が画面に突然現れ、またすぐに消えた。 A brilliant ray of light appeared on the screen and immediately disappeared again.

Mother Gabriella? Is something wrong, ma’am?

「先生、大丈夫？」

Sorry, it’s nothing. 「驚かせてごめんなさいね」

Gabriella wasn’t sure herself what exactly that sharp ray of light that appeared then disappeared in an instant could be. 一瞬のうちに鋭く光り去っていった光線が何なのか、ガブリエラ自身もまだはっきりと突き止めてはいない。

She had first noticed its existence while communicating with a human being on a mountain called Osorezan in Japan. その存在に初めて気づいたのは、日本の霊山に暮らすある者と交信していた時だった。

Though the light was not an everyday occurrence on the Cloud, it was not yet time to tell her students about it. その光は雲の世界で普通に見られる現象ではなかったが、しかし現段階では生徒に話すべきことではない。

She was certain that it was a spirit, and a friendly one. 恐らく何者かの魂で、友好的であることは確信していた。

As I was saying, Talia, you should focus on your studies instead of watching those video streams all the time. 「今言ったように、ビデオストリームばかり見ていないで勉強に励むべきですよ、タリア」

文句ばっかし。天使としては確かにまだ未熟かも知れないが、タリアはそう思わずにいられない。

But Mother Gabriella, wouldn’t it be better for us to watch humans and get a good understanding of them so we can offer them better service? そう、タリアの考えでは人間を観察してその生態をよく理解してこそ彼らに尽くすことができるに違いない。

I’m not blind, Talia. I can see which particular human you were watching…again. 全く、性懲りもなく同じ人物ばかり「観察」しているのだから。

I’m just worried about how Angie’s doing as a human teenager. 「アンジーが人間の若者として上手くやっているのか心配なだけです」 It wasn’t that long ago that she used to sit right here beside me in class. 「ついこの間まで、この教室で肩を並べていたんですもの」

Gabriella softened her voice. Her memory has been wiped, Talia. 「天使だった頃の記憶はもはや残っていないのですよ。」 She isn’t Angie anymore, she’s Angela. She no longer remembers the friendship that the two of you had. 「もうアンジーはいないのですよ。彼女はアンジェラ、あなた との友情も今では記憶に残っていません」 She’s just a normal human being now. Leave her be. 「普通の人間になったのですから、そっとしておいておあげなさい」

All we want to do is keep an eye on her, ma’am, make sure she’s okay. 「先生、僕たち彼女を見守っていたいだけです」

That’s very noble of you, Tenshi. テンシが心底、アンジーを心配していることをガブリエラは承知していた。「でもね、アンジーが天使の資格を剥奪される過ちを犯してしまった時、確かあなたとペアを組んでいたのではなかったかしら？ あの人間を無事に天界に導く筈だったアンジーがその命を救ったことは大きなミスだったのですよ。一緒にいたにも関わらず、あなたは何もしなかったわよね？」

I know, and I’m sorry. I didn’t know what to do back then. 「分ってます。ごめんなさい、ホントに反省しています。あの頃はどうすればいいのか分んなかったんです」

And that, dear child, is the reason why you should study. だからこそ勉強しなくてはならないことは言われるまでもない。「今は人員削減の真っ只中だということを忘れないで。二人とも、先ずは自分自身のことを心配なさい」 All right? You need to be more concerned about yourselves.

「はーい」

All right, then, let’s go back to page three thousand and fifty-nine. 「ちょうどアンジーの話題も出たことだし、人間にその寿命を伝える方法について検証してまいりましょう」

雲の上で授業が続いていたのと同じ頃、遥か下の世界でもまた人間界にいるアンジェラ・バフェットの動きを凝視する者がいた。

Ah, there you are, my love.

やっとの思いで愛しい女性を見つけたルーカスだった。 Staring at his beloved Angela, his fangs glittered in his dark world. 溢れる喜びでその牙が光った。 Ever since he first laid eyes on her during a fair held between the universes over Christmas truce, he had been head over heels in love. クリスマス休戦中のフェアで飲み物を配るアンジェラの姿を初めて見たその時から彼はアンジーにぞっこんで、花嫁にすると心に決めていた。

She will be my bride. 以来、任務に失敗したことは耳にしたものの、ずっと探し続けていた。ようやく居場所が分った喜びで力が入りすぎて思わず牙が抜け落ちてしまいそうだった。

He’d been searching for her ever since, using the high-tech equipment he’d developed in his personal lab. このオタク悪魔は個人研究室で開発したハイテク機器を駆使してアンジーを探し続けていたのだが、それがようやく見つけたのだった。

He’d finally found her in the sleepy town of Hopesville, USA— 彼女は、アメリカのホープスビルという平和な町にいた――そして天才の名にふさわしく、ルーカスは独自で人間界に行く方法を発見したのだった。おかげさまで通常必要な手順を踏まずしても人間界に行くことができる。

天才で何が悪い？ 後は人間仕様の顔マスクを装着し、アンジーが自分に惚れこむように仕向けるアプローチのみだった。

As Angie was now a cross between angelship and mortality, having her say yes to his proposal to marriage would yield him great power. そう、元天使で現在は人間であるアンジーがプロポーズにイエスと答えること によって、プロポーズした側には誰も想像がつかない程に強力な力なのである。

ルーカスは荷物をまとめながらケタケタと笑わずにいられなかった。その甲高い笑い声が、ラボの壁を通して周囲に響き渡った。

The combination of the different types of energy would enable him to take over the human universe. 異なる世界のエネルギーの組み合わせによって彼は人間界を手にすることができる。

It would be followed by two full days of uninterrupted access to The Cloud. The angels would be helpless to defend themselves. さらに二日間にわたって雲の上と繋がり、天使たちはその間、自らの身を守ることすらできなくなる。

Was it her imagination, or was her mom becoming more and more of a nag recently? 想像だろうか？いや、想像ではない。どうも最近、母親がますます口うるさくなってきた。

Angela, hurry up or you’re going to be late!

これくらいで遅刻なんてしねーよ。アンジェラは母親のいつもの怒鳴り声を尻目に、肩まで伸びた金髪が念入りにとかしていた。

She wondered if her mom ever got tired of saying the same old things day in and day out. 朝から晩まで同じことの繰り返し。母は職場でもそうなのだろうか？

Cripes, she wouldn’t be surprised if all the reporters hated her. だとしたら、部下の記者たちに嫌われても仕方ない。

She opened the door to the upstairs bathroom by a fraction and called out to her mom. ２階の洗面所の扉を少し開ければ声は一回のキッチンまで届く。

I’ll be downstairs in a minute!

「すぐ行くから！」そう言ってアンジェラは首を傾げた。

Mothers had to have been sixteen once. この世の母親たちというものにも恐らく、大昔ではあるだろうが、１６歳だった頃があった筈だ。

Didn’t they want to look their best if they were going to be in the same class as their heartthrobs? 同じクラスに好きな男子がいたら、可愛く決めていきたいと思ったことはなかったのだろうか？ 毎朝のように繰り広げられる洗面所前の儀式は、一日のルックスを左右する重要なものだということがなぜ分らないのだろう。

The light dimmed, and then brightened again. こんな時にまさか停電だろうか？ 薄暗くなってまた明るくなる電灯は朝の忙しい時間帯はこの上なく迷惑である。親友のルーシーなら「幽霊が何かを伝えようとしている！」と興奮するだろう。しかしアンジェラはそんなことはしない。

But Angela was more realistic. アンジェラはもっと現実的なのである。 Maybe being the oldest daughter of a wire service news editor and a former star photographer did that to a girl, particularly after her parents got divorced. 通信社のエデイターと元スターフォトグラアー、しかも離婚したその両親の長女としては、そう簡単に動じることはない。 It was probably time to go out and buy a new light bulb. 新しい電球を買ってきて交換すればいい。いつも忙しいママが気づく訳がないから私がやらなくては、と溜息まじりに思うアンジェラだった。

Thanks to her parents, Angela had been exposed to the not-so-happy side of life at an early age. 両親のおかげでアンジェラは、幼い頃から人生の薔薇色ではない側面を見てきた。自分が小さい頃に親は離婚するわ、その後も仕事の電話で母親が話している内容といえば戦争や紛争、凄惨な事件や事故の取材のことと、世の中にはかなり暗い話題が実に多い。 Wars, conflicts, accidents and gruesome incidents—the world was full of negative topics.

「おばあちゃんだってそうだったし・・・」

It was the same thing with her grandmother. Angela had loved Grandma Emilou, but the dementia had set in when she was still in elementary school. 小学校の頃には大好きだったエミルーおばあちゃんが認知方を患い、亡くなるまでの間、本人はもちろん、周囲も苦しい時期を過ごした。

The illness had been pretty serious, and it had been tough on everyone. It sometimes made her beloved grandma a complete stranger. 病気のせいで祖母が全く知らない別人になってしまうこともあった。

Mom had been juggling grandma’s care with her deputy role at work while taking care of Tommy, who’d just been a noisy baby then. 当時の母は編集部のナンバー２を勤めながらも祖母の介護と、生まれたばかりのトミーの世話に明け暮れていた。

It had taken her almost a year before she realized exactly how sick grandma had been and how impossible it was to do everything for her single-handedly. エミルーの症状がいかに重症だったか気づくまでに一年近くかかり、その時初めて、全てを１人で抱え込むことは無理だと理解したのだった。

Mom had already divorced her dad, but because he was always flying around chasing politicians, she was the only one who could take care of Grandma. その時点で母親は既に離婚していたが、父親は連日、政治家を追って国内外を飛び回っていたため、祖母の面倒を見ることができるのは母以外にいなかった。

Angela had watched her mom struggle and learned that life could be tough. 苦労する母を見て育ったアンジェラが学んだことは、人生が厳しいものだということである。

She didn’t believe in ghosts or the supernatural; she was interested in what was physically there in front of her. 幽霊や超自然現象などというものには目もくれず、目の前の現実を見据える習性が身についていた。そんなアンジェラの前に現れたのがデレク・クラークという青年だった。

Then one day, Derek came into the picture. Derek Clark was in her French class, which she had for first period today. 今日の一時間目のフランス語のクラスでもデレクに会える。 Thanks to Derek, Angela was becoming more of a dreaming girl than the somewhat strained personality she’d been before. デレクのおかげできつかった性格が少しばかり、夢見る乙女のものになっていた。

I’m coming, Mom! 「今行くから！」

Angela finished up with the super-extension mascara and tucked her strawberry-flavored lip gloss into her jeans pocket. ボリュームマスカラをしっかりとまつ毛に乗せて、イチゴ味のリップグロスをジーパンのポケットに仕舞い込んだアンジェラは、1階のキッチンへと急いだ。 She had to hurry so she could get a bite to eat. やっぱりちょこっと何か食べてから学校に行きたい。

「早くシリアルを食べて」 Eat you cereal, quick, her mother ordered. 言われなくたってさっさと食べるよ。

It’s easy, just pour the cereal into a bowl, pour milk over it, and eat. シリアルをボールに開けて、その上から牛乳をかけて食べるだけ。シリアルは簡単なんだから。

Can you leave in five minutes, Angela? 「アンジェラ、5分で出られる？」 I won’t be able to give you a ride if you aren’t ready to leave right away. I have an editorial meeting first thing this morning." 「朝一番に編集会議があるの。時間がかかるようだったら車で送ってあげられないわ」

アンジェラはスクールバスで行くから送ってもらわなくていいよ、と言いかけて口をつぐんだ。 Angela was about to say that she could take the school bus but reconsidered. Mom might be a pain in the neck, but her Audi was definitely more comfortable than the cattle drive alternative. そりゃあ混雑したバスでぎゅうぎゅう詰めになるより母親のアウディの方が快適に決まっている。

The school bus was actually okay, but the last one before the bell was always so crowded her hair would get messed up and she’d end up looking like a witch. スクールバスも悪くはないのだけど、遅刻すれすれの最終バスだとものすごく混み合うので魔女のようにぐちゃぐちゃになった髪形で登校することになってしまう。アンジェラは黙ってシリアルをかっ込んだ。

Ew, you’re wearing makeup, her younger brother commented. 「うげっ、化粧してやんの」とテーブルの向かいに座る弟が言った。 Yuck. You smell like some kinda icky powder. 「おえー、気持ち悪い粉みたいな匂いがする」

あんたみたいなガキにはほのかなハーブの香りの良さが分らないだろうね。 You wouldn’t appreciate the subtle fragrances of herbs, would you, pipsqueak? At least I don’t stink like you do, Tommy-stinko. 「あんたみたいに臭くないだけでもマシだよ、くさくさトミー！」アンジェラはグラノーラを食べながら負けずに言い返した。

「僕、臭くないもん！」 I do not stink!
