About this ebook

AS GABRIEL RECALLS HIS MEMORIES, HIS TRUE SELF AWAKENS
BORN A HUMAN, FATED TO BECOME A GOD

Gabriel and the kidnapped Sofia, Amber and Sam are brought back to the village where Gabriel grows up the only son of its chief. And again, he is being readied to become the sacrifice to the sacred cenote. Will he die this time?

As Gabriel tried to help Sofia and the others escape the oppressive village of Mayan descendants, he fails to save himself and was retaken. But by this time, Gabriel knows he is more than human, the chief's adopted son, or a sacrifice to the sacred waters of the cenote. And that he has the power to call upon the jungle to save himself.

He begins to believe. But when he turns into what he is fated to become, he is going to lose his humanity — and Sofia.

EXCERPT
Ahau stumbled and reflexively reached for something to grab onto. He smiled, almost cried.

It was the old handcar.

“We’re here!” he cried out. He felt the others rush around him as they, too, felt the contours of the old handcar.

He helped Sofia and Amber up onto the rusted platform and together they worked out a rhythm for which to pump the lever.

“Seven miles,” Sam huffed as the car creaked along. The handcar might be a tetanus shot’s worst enemy, but it would survive. The lights began to fade into the darkness.

“Get to the shore,” Ahau said. “Head north.”

It was only then that Sofia realized that he had no intention of going with them.

“Wait!” she shrieked. “What are you going to do?” She tried to hold on to him, but the rain only made it hard for her to do so.

“Just go,” he said as he slid out of her grasp and off of the platform. “They will not kill me, but I can give you time. I’ll be all right.”

The creaking faded faster than he wanted it to. In the dark, partially blinded as he was from having seen the lights, Sofia vanished from his life like a candle flame being extinguished even as he heard her crying.

    Chapter One

THE SIGHT OF the man Acan brought back everything.

His -- Gabriel... Ahau, he didn't even know who he was anymore -- identity was so bound up with Acan's prophecies that just seeing the man looming above him choked his breathing even though they were as far from standing water as could be. As Sofia, Sam and Amber were being shoved into the empty shed where he had spent many a long week or month, he felt like his soul was being split in two. There had been a time when Acan sentenced him to a year in there, but eventually Cuali, his wife, needed his help more than she needed Acan's blessings so she let him out. He felt like he was two persons pushing each other out of one body -- he was Gabriel, whom he had come to accept as who he was; and Ahau, whom he wished he had never remembered.

Acan grabbed him by the ear and dragged him to the house. Gabriel thought to protest, but Ahau didn't dare. The truncheon Acan used materialized in his hand -- even now, Ahau still had no idea where the man kept it -- and Gabriel shrieked as Acan rained down blows.

You -- should -- be -- dead! Acan hissed. How -- dare -- you -- come -- back?!

The Fonsecas weren't exactly a loving family, not in the way that families on their TV had been, but the hatred and anger in the man's voice shocked Gabriel. The part of him that remembered the man's vicious temper prayed that he would be exhausted soon. For a moment, he saw himself from above, cowering under Acan's blows. And he was ashamed to have remembered anything at all for the memory made him a boy, and he was already, in fact, a man.

Yet, he couldn't fight back. This man, cruel though he was, was the only father he had ever known. Acan had once dragged him five miles through the jungle on a makeshift stretcher when he was too ill from malaria to sit up. He had stayed with him in the hospital for two months with Ahau before he was well enough to walk, and another six weeks before the doctors considered him well enough to send home. He had not dared ask how much it would cost them, but Acan had insisted that he
