Last summer, I made the decision to travel throughout Europe, spending a few weeks touring Italy and then a week in Switzerland. I made my way from there to France, where I was fortunate enough to be welcomed into a very delightful gathering of revelers who partook of regular orgies. The parties that I attended while there were amazing, and I found myself to be in great demand. Of course, the fact that I am a Count, and Russian as well, only added to the mystique, and women were always willing to offer themselves to me.

Upon departing France, I took a four day cruise through the Mediterranean, and from there I decided to travel to Algiers, which had recently been conquered by the French. I set out on a different steam vessel, intrigued by what I might find in this new and distant land.

The first meal that was served on board was on the first evening, and all the passengers were seated around a long dining table. The fellow next to me kept making every effort to engage me in conversation, but for most of the meal I managed to fend him off with the occasional smile or nod. Once I had finished eating, however, I decided that I might as well accommodate him.

I suppose you are going to Algiers for business, same as me, the man said loudly.

I turned and looked at him full on for the first time of the
