    Foreword

The first time I met a Burmese, he was presiding over an art gallery. I was there to view paintings and sketches wonderfully rendered by the daughter of a friend, but the true work of art that immediately caught my eye was the small brown cat curled up on the end of the sofa.

I always cringe a little when I describe a Burmese as brown, or hear someone use that ordinary word for such an extraordinary cat. The short, tight coat of the Burmese is a rippling canvas of complimentary shades of brown, with elegant points of emphasis at the base of the ears and on the muzzle.

Of course, that’s just on the sable variety. A champagne Burmese is equally stunning in subtle cream tones darkening to mocha in all the right places. To call such cats just brown or beige doesn’t do them justice.

And yet, paradoxically, the first Burmese I met was a little male named Coco, and he was . . . well . . . brown. He was indeed the gallery cat, a gift to the owner from a cattery-owning acquaintance. Coco had a pronounced under bite and a kink in his tail and was thus dubbed pet quality.

I thought the little knob on his tail and his tiny pearly fangs were adorable, and hardly anything I’d call a defect. That is, however, the meaning of pet quality. The cats do not accurately represent the breed standard to a degree suitable to be part of a breeding program, and so they’re sold – or in this case given away – to good homes.

Coco shared the house with three other cats; one he adored and two he bullied so shamelessly they had to live upstairs. This regal personage presided over his realm with lordly calm, gazing placidly out at the world through stunning amber eyes with an expression that plainly said, Mine, all mine.

In discussions with the gallery owner I was impressed with her descriptions of the breed’s level of intelligence and extremely companionable nature. Since that time I have known other Burmese cats and had the privilege of living with one.

Burmese cats are, as Coco proved, rather executive minded when it comes to running the household, but they are also affectionate and enjoy being with their humans as much as possible.

The breed holds a unique position among felines of Oriental origin. Although the more commanding and dramatic Siamese once overshadowed the breed, the Burmese has more than come into its own and is highly valued as a beloved and devoted companion.

    Acknowledgments

I would like to dedicate this book to my very dear friend Isabel who has looked after all my beautiful cats when I have had to be away from home, for more years than I can care to remember. Her love and affection along with the way she has spoilt my boys and girls is something I deeply appreciate and makes the leaving so much easier. The peace of mind that gives me is so wonderful – thank you Isabel.

To my wonderful husband Nick, again thank you for all your assistance in helping me research and undertaking the dreaded proof reading. His observations and comments are as always invaluable and without his encouragement I would no doubt have given up on this venture a long time ago.

Just a note to say that I have written this book using American spelling as that is what I’m used to. I have given measurements in both feet and inches/pounds and ounces and also in metric. I have also given costs in US$ and GBP. Both the measurements and costs are approximate guides. I have done my best to ensure the accuracy of the information in this book as at the time of publication.
