    Everything was eerily quiet. Sarah kept waiting for sirens or alarms, gunfire or the tramp of feet following them. But as Ivan led her through the woods at a brisk walk everything seemed strangely normal. There were wide avenues between the sparse trees that allowed plenty of light in for brambles and undergrowth to grow thick. Ivan forged through it ahead of her as if it wasn’t there, and she scrambled after him not wanting to be left too far behind.

    Do you think they’re onto us, she said, breaking the silence as the sun began to turn the sky from dreary gray to brilliant blue and lavender.

    I think so. Ivan said as he glanced over his shoulder at her. Then he slowed his pace so they could walk side by side and put an arm around her shoulders. With luck, he’ll just think that we became lovers and ran off. If that’s what he thinks, he won’t want you dead. You’re valuable property to him after all. He gave her a gentle squeeze.

    I’m not sure that’s a good thing. I’d rather die than go back. She looked down, shaking her head. Ivan paused, gently turning her to face him. He took her chin in his hand and tilted her face up towards his, kissing her softly.

    Don’t say things like that. You won’t have to die or go back. He smiled and she tentatively smiled back, taking a deep breath of the brisk morning air, scented with wood and churned earth and Ivan’s subtle scent. Him not wanting you dead is a good thing, because it means they’re going to have to be more careful than we are. Come on

    He stopped abruptly, looking back the way they had come. Very faintly on the wind Sarah heard the sound of baying hounds. Ivan grabbed her hand and pulled her into a run. Time to move now.

    She could hear the faint edge of fear in his voice, but didn’t have time to dwell on it. Though she had always been fairly athletic, it had been a long time since Sarah had done any serious running. She could tell she was slowing Ivan down so she grimly put her head
