Cancer or Chemotherapy: A Guide to Survival
()
About this ebook
This is one person’s story of a journey through the maze of cancer. A journey of diagnosis and treatment relating to Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and the personal experience of its effect on body, mind and spirit. As a health professional who lived by her beliefs in a healthy environment, diet and lifestyle it was a great shock when Noelle Sherrard received this diagnosis.
Her book includes a brief journal through the chemotherapy treatments; the use of a variety of Complementary and Alternative Medicines to treat the side effects; the emotional roller-coaster; and the spiritual support and subsequent growth that developed.
Noelle Sherrard
Noelle Sherrard was a practicing naturopath, herbalist and homeopath for more than twenty years. Her interest and commitment to the health industry led her, in 2010, to write her first book – Crystal Clear, a book describing the harnessing of the combined potential power of crystals and water. She was co-founder and principal of a college for traditional medicine for seven years and latterly lectured at an indigenous college educating Aboriginal people in the combination of traditional bush medicine with traditional western herbal medicine. This terminated when, at the age of seventy seven, Noelle was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. This prompted her to put pen to paper again and in Cancer or Chemotherapy, she describes her ensuing journey.

Introduction
As we move into the second decade of the twenty-first century we are faced with the possibility of more nuclear accidents and the startling reminder that one person in three faces the prospect of cancer.
It would seem that there is no one cure for cancer. At best there is a five year survival rate, or periods spanning greater or lesser time lines. More and more drugs are being developed which is encouraging but appropriate testing makes the likelihood of mainstream use many years away.
Individuals are faced with four choices:
See it out in the hope there will be newer more effective drugs available;
Try the existing drugs;
Go down the path of CAM (Complementary and Alternative Medicine); or
Use a combination of CAM and existing drugs.
When we are faced with cancer, more often than not the fear factor forms part of the equation – I think this is part of being human. This fear adds to the anxiety and confusion of making treatment choices. I believe there is a more simple way which may be used effectively when restoring the body to health and which can be incorporated as part of any regime we may choose to adopt and that is – to balance acidity/alkalinity; have plenty of good quality drinking water; ensure an adequate supply of oxygen; good quality protein; and supply the body with quality minerals and vitamins. Sounds too easy, doesn’t it?
My reasons for writing this book are twofold:
as part of my own healing process; and
to offer it to others who are travelling the same path in the hope that the grey areas of fear dissipate and in their place some sun shines.
This book is not a research paper; it is the story of my personal journey with cancer. Consequently I have not referenced any of my nutritional or scientific statements. I have been a practicing naturopath for twenty five years and the material contained herein has been obtained from studying, teaching, experience and researching over that period of time.
My Story
Judging by the number of books being written on the subject, there is little doubt that, certainly in the western world, we are moving towards a body-mind system of healing. Oriental and Eastern medicine have embraced this concept for millennia; it is not new. In writing this book, I hope to impart to thousands of others, past, present and future, who have walked, stumbled, tottered, limped and hobbled along this same path, some basic ideas of survival which address, not only the body-mind connection, but the ever expanding world of complementary, or integrative medicine. It is this world which offers a handrail as we try to negotiate the sharp bends, steep inclines, pot holes and rough terrain which is the world of cancer and chemotherapy. Not by any means do I underestimate the body-mind connection – it got me through the tortuous maze which is cancer and chemotherapy, but the handrail
offered me everyday support at ground level when my mind was off somewhere else refusing to be in the present. As a consequence of this there were times when I did not have access to the body-mind system and had to rely on the handrail
.
During the several months of treatment I kept a diary. This enabled me to record my feelings – physical, mental and emotional. I have included this in the book without many alterations because I feel it is important that others on the same path know they are not alone, and also that the handrail
of complementary and integrative medicine is ever present.
Why is there so much cancer in the world today? Apart from the long answer of foods, chemicals, and radiation of all types, there is the short answer: the pH of our body and a shortage of oxygen, as well as substandard water. To understand this (to stand under and know) in its simplicity yet complexity is to know the answer to that question.
Fish tanks must have the correct pH for fish to survive; swimming pools require the correct pH for us to be able to swim in the water without getting sick; soil requires the correct pH for plants to thrive and draw the nutrients from
