    Bedtime Story

    The banging grew louder and more forceful against Molly's closet door. The little girl pulled her covers up to her nose and stared, trembling, at the closet. She had not noticed that her closet had been closed at first, but the moment she did Molly jumped into bed. She always left the closet opened, even just a crack, so as not to anger the thing inside. The monster, as she called it, was plenty angry now. Clearly the monster blamed her. It always blamed her. The last time the closet got closed the monster threatened to suck out her eyes with a straw. The memory made her shudder. Molly knew that she had to open that door now, before the banging woke up her mother.

    Carefully Molly pulled down the covers until they covered only her legs, as she willed herself forward out of pure terror. Hands sweating and tears flowing from her small eyes, she got one foot on the floor before she heard her name. At first she thought the monster in her closet was calling her. The banging continued, so it was not the monster. She heard it again, realizing it was her mother. The monster must have too because the banging stopped. Molly froze and waited to see if her mother called again. She did. The frightened child heard her mother’s footsteps coming down the hall at the same time she heard something shift inside the closet. As her mother entered the bedroom, Molly slowly retreated back onto the bed and under her covers.

    Her mother stood in the doorway with her arms crossed, glaring at Molly like she did the dog when it chewed her best shoes. The look that said she would beat Molly's ass. Through gritted teeth her mother spoke clearly and calmly.

    What is all that noise, young lady? You are supposed to be asleep.

    Molly timidly pointed to the closet.
