"Don't be afraid," he whispered in her ear, and she felt his lips brushing her lobe.

Just like that, and the fear evaporated but for a thin shadow. She was not afraid of him. She was afraid of the unexpected, of what she didn't know. But she would never be afraid of Nickolas. Never anymore.

Chapter One

NICKOLAS STOOD BY the car next to the road, still talking on the phone with his bodyguards. Iliana stayed inside the car, holding the shredded top of her dress with both hands. She felt defeated, overwhelmed. She wanted to go home.

She wanted to put herself to bed... alone. Surely he could not think of sleeping with her tonight after what had just happened?

But as soon as she thought this, she remembered the way his hand touched her face when he thought she had fallen asleep.

She gulped, feeling her throat constrict.

She missed sleeping with him.

She missed all the nights when she fell asleep enclosed in his embrace. Afterward, she woke up feeling the warmth of his skin on her skin.

She thought to herself, You can't think about that now. Wake up, Iliana! You're a fool if you still believe he was that man. Wake up!

She gained control of herself. As she did so, she became curious. Why weren't they leaving? He's already called his bodyguards twice. It seemed there was a problem that, for once, Nickolas could not solve quickly.

She thought she heard the sound of a car approaching from a distance. The road was empty and dark. The sound closed in on them.

Out of nowhere, another similar sound filled her head. It was a sound from a very distant past.

Ta... ta... ta... ta...

Iliana felt her insides roil in pain. She felt nauseous. She thought, No, it can't be.

An empty road in the middle of nowhere. Nickolas couldn't make his guards move fast enough...

Danger!

The hair at the nape of her neck rose as she opened her eyes. Panicking, she looked for Nickolas outside the car window. He had his back turned to her, still busy on the phone, speaking in a clipped voice.

She moved quickly despite the soreness she felt all over her body. She released her seat belt even before she knew what she was doing. She found herself outside the car in a flash.

She ran towards him, screaming his name, warning him. Nickolas! Hide!

Had she taken a moment to think about it, she might have considered the possibility of letting fate run its course. All she had to do was sit back and watch. Events would proceed in whatever manner they would without her assistance.

Nickolas might experience something unpleasant or he might not. Had Iliana thought about it, she would have come to the conclusion that this man who had raped her, this same man for whom she felt a desire she could not explain, might deserve whatever was coming to him.
