Chapter 1

Back in the village of Elohttub, Erectus was surprised to see a chariot bearing the Royal crest waiting outside the inn. He wondered if the rider of that chariot had already been at the job site while Erectus and his friends were down in the ravine having gratuitous sex with a genie. He wondered if the rider of the chariot outranked him.

Can't be anybody too important, Kumjoi said, or he wouldn't have come alone.

True enough, Erectus said, feeling his apprehensions fade. I think it's a messenger. Let's go in and see what he wants.

Inside the cool dimness of the common room he saw only Layme, who caught his eye, poked a forefinger through the circle of the thumb and forefinger of her other hand, then pointed with her thumb to the back. Erectus nodded that he understood, and took a position at a table where he could watch the curtains the man would have to come out through when he was done in the back room.

Layme brought them a round of beer, and they all had a couple of drinks before the curtains parted and a short, but well-muscled man swaggered out. He took about three steps before
