- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Loved it! I strongly recommend this author. Can't wait to read the next one.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Not one of Watt-Evans' best, although the ending could provide a moderately satisfying wrap-up for established Ethshar fans. Starts very slowly and proceeds without a definite sense of where the story is going and why anyone should care, unless they find something inherently interesting in the selfish and moderately brainless career-related flailings of a desperate 12-year-old boy who would be rather mundane if he had been born in a mundane setting. As I've never been a 12-year-old boy, I can't say absolutely for sure, but the narrative seems like a reasonable approximation of being inside the head of an overprivileged, potentially clever boy who needs to age into his intelligence — so for those of us who have no desire to think like that for 200+ pages, and in the absence of the usual Watt-Evans hijinks, the narrative is a little dull. Once the boy's initial plan has been thoroughly and completely thwarted, and there are people onscreen aside from the boy and the random, unimportant people he briefly encounters, the writing gets better and the story gets more interesting. The better-written bit takes up maybe a fourth of the book, at the very end, which is itself probably made more interesting by a previous knowledge of the Ethshar universe. This book reads like a throwaway story that needs more polishing and editing, with a few mildly interesting glimpses of other Ethshar storylines thrown in — although the basic idea is definitely sound. Not a great standalone book, and not required reading for any but the most rabid Ethshar fans. Sorry, Watt-Evans ... but everyone has their better and worse books. I'll keep reading anyway. ;)
