Preface
.......
In the ancient past, many great men were born in India
who left an impact on human civilisation. One among
them was Sakyamuni Gautama Buddha, the
One,
Compassionate One who showed man the way out of
xistence
the suffering and misery of existence . Before appearing
on Earth as the Buddha, he took several births as
Bodhisattva. He narrated the stories of his previous births
to the monks of his Sangha to illustrate his teachings.
The tales about animals contained profound moral
content. These must be read to gain information on some
significant heritage
of the most significant aspects of our literary her itage .

A bout 2,500 years ago, Kapilavastu was a flourishing city
surrounded by tall sal trees on the foothills of the Himalayas,
bordering Nepal. It was the capital of the royal kingdom
established by the Sakyas, the Kshatriya clan.
The Sakyas were a peace-loving people, who were ruled by
King Shuddhodhana. The king was brave, kind and generous.
His subjects loved and respected him. He had a beautiful wife
named Maya.
One night, Maya had an unusual dream. She saw a sparkling
esce
white elephant descend from heaven and enter her body. When
stories of her dream reached the common masses, the Sakyas were
delighted at the meaning of this prophetic dream their queen
had seen. They said that the dream was very auspicious as it
signified the birth of an heir to their king.
Gradually days passed into weeks and weeks into months. The
child in the womb of the queen grew like a moon in the clouds.
Not far from the Sakya capital
