WHEN HE DIED at the age of twenty-nine he had committed crimes that made Adolf Hitler look like an Eagle Scout. He killed his own father when he was barely out of infancy and later forced his sisters into prostitution to finance his debauches. He called himself God but was so cowardly that he hid under the bed whenever he heard a clap of thunder. He seduced hundreds of beautiful women but paraded in female attire and kissed handsome actors in public. His orgies were to provide the inspiration for those of Nero, who was his nephew, yet he astounded everyone with his shrewd business sense. During one wild celebration he had over three hundred drowned.
This was Caligula, the madman who ruled Rome for four turbulent years, from 37 to 41 A.D., until he was struck down by an assassin’s sword.
Ironically, there were few figures in history whose background and early life seemed more promising.
Caligula was the son of Germanicus, a distinguished Roman general who was both the nephew and adopted son of the Emperor Tiberius.
It was customary for Roman emperors to adopt their would-be successors and Germanicus got the nod because of his popularity as well as his military prowess.
This celebrated soldier christened his son Gaius Caesar but he received the nickname Caligula – Little Boot
– because Germanicus took him along as a mascot on his campaigns and dressed him in a miniature uniform complete with a tiny pair of boots.
All the soldiers adored the youngster but his favorite friend was Cassius Chaerea, one of Germanicus’s bravest officers, who entertained Caligula by carrying him around on his shoulders.
