Simple story but too short to get interested in characters. Could have been so much better.

DRELLA UNLOCKED THE door and stepped through into the hallway, dropping her keys and the paper bag she was carrying on the table by the door. She slid her purse off and hung it on the doorknob of the closet before picking up the bag and walking into the living room.

And then she stopped dead.

A man was sitting on her couch.

He was big.

That was her first thought. Even seated, she could see he was big and heavily muscled all over. He was dressed all in black. Dark, shoulder-length hair fell in waves around a face that would have been intimidating even on a man half his stature. Eyes as dark as midnight sat under a heavy brow, and a strong jaw with a short, scruff of a goatee on his chin rounded out the picture. Overall, that picture was pretty goddamn frightening.

Her blue eyes widened, and she backed up instinctively, right into the kitchen counter.

Who are you? she asked, her voice a bare tremble. Who let you in?

I did.

His voice was deep and forbidding, and he stretched an arm across the back of the couch, as though he had been expecting her and merely waiting patiently.

Drella’s eyes darted to the door, judging the distance.

Don’t. He managed to put a wealth of warning into that one word.

She was shaking, wishing she’d kept her keys in her hand. At least she’d have some kind of weapon. She wet her lips. What do you want?

Not a flicker of emotion crossed his face. You.

Stall him. She needed to keep him talking. If she couldn’t make it to the door, maybe she could make it to the balcony, and then down the fire escape. At the very least, she’d be outside where other people could hear her.

She started to inch slowly, very slowly along the counter as she spoke.

Her voice was entirely too thin and breathy. Do I know you from somewhere?

Just a little further . . .

He stood up, and he was even bigger than she’d thought, easily a foot taller than she was.

No. He stepped over to move between her and the balcony door, clearly having figured out what she was trying to do.

Why are you so sure it’s me you’re looking for?

Drella. Of Inir.

His voice was a growl and the coldness in his eyes as he perused her made her spine stiffen. She lifted her chin and glared at him, all pretense of fear gone.

Shit.

She turned her back on him, walking around the counter and reaching into the paper bag. His expression was inscrutable as he watched her carefully, but all she pulled from the bag were two cartons of Chinese food, setting them on the counter.

Do you mind if I eat? she asked. I missed lunch and I’m starving.

He crossed his arms and raised one dark brow.

Allowed.

She rolled her eyes as she reached into a drawer and pulled out a fork. Then she opened a carton and stuffed the fork in, twirling
