Hatchet by Gary Paulsen was first published in 1987. It is a young-adult novel that describes survival in wilderness. The novel was the winner of the ‘Newbery Honor Award.’ It was the fifth novel written by the author.

The author, Gary Paulson, was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1939. It is said that Paulson was not a brilliant student and he did not have much motivation to inspire him. However, an incident in his life changed his life forever.

It was a very cold day. Gary Paulson entered a library to warm up. In the library, the librarian gave him a library card and a book to read.

Paulson was not much interested in reading and he showed reluctance at first, but soon he began to read with a lot of enthusiasm.

After reading that book, he was a transformed person and he became an avid reader.

Gary Paulson had spent a very difficult childhood while he was living with his alcoholic parents. At the age of fourteen, he left home and ran away. Having left his home, he began to travel with a carnival.

During his travel with the carnival he got a sense of adventure which he constantly maintained throughout his life. During his adventures, to survive in this difficult world, he did several odd jobs. With the help of these odd jobs, he enabled himself to pursue his writing career on the side.

He worked as a teacher, construction worker, sailor, actor, electronic field engineer, director, rancher, satellite technician, and singer. These different jobs provided him enough opportunities to meet several different people from different walks of life and in the process he gained immense amount of experience.

From 1958 to 1962, he served in the army. One of the primary adventures was the completion of the Iditarod, which he finished two times. It was 1,180 miles Alaskan dog sled race.

When he eventually determined that he wanted to pursue his career as a writer seriously, he began to work for a magazine as an editor to get some experience in the world of publishing.

In the year 1966, he published his first novel The Special War. In his writing career, he has written more than forty books, two hundred magazine articles, many short stories, and several plays. Most of his plays were written for
