GREETINGS TO THE STUDENT
Dear Student,
Welcome to a brand new quarter of study in God’s Word! The Baptist Training Union’s curriculum series, Contemporary Training for the Church, is a great tool to aid one’s spiritual growth. The series enables the reader to learn more about the Bible and how to apply its principles to his or her life. For this current quarter, we will look at passages that inform our soteriology. This is a fancy word that refers to the study of the doctrine of salvation. Each lesson in this quarter will examine different aspects that relate to one’s personal salvation in Jesus Christ. We will study what it means to be a Christian and how salvation is obtained. We will also see what Christians are to do after gaining salvation from their sins. We at the R.H. Boyd Publishing Corporation hope that this quarter brings new insights into God’s Word and that your hearts will be challenged. We hope that this quarter of study will encourage you to be fully empowered for service in the Kingdom of God.
God bless!

III. God Promised a Redeemer
TRAINING SESSION
If you were to imagine paradise, what would you envision? Would your paradise be a place where you never feel pain again? Would it overflow with green landscapes and rivers? Everyone has some unique ideas for what their paradise would look like and what they would do if they lived there. Did you know that God created a paradise for His creation?
In the book of Genesis, believers can read about the very first paradise: the Garden of Eden. God created this perfect land for the first people, Adam and Eve. They were never in need because God supplied for all of their needs. They had food and water. They had the shelter of the garden. There were plants and animals that they could care for and cherish.
Adam and Eve were commanded to be stewards of the earth, meaning they were to take care of the garden. They moved through the garden freely, worshiping and fellowshiping with God. But their paradise did not last forever because they did not follow God’s commands. Today’s lesson details how Adam and Eve lost paradise and how today believers still deal with the consequences of a paradise lost.
I. A DAM AND E VE S INNED
In the Garden of Eden, there were two trees: the Tree of Life and the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. Although Adam and Eve had free will, God gave them rules to help them live. He said, ‘You may freely eat of every tree of the garden; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall die’
(Gen. 2:16–17, NRSV). Adam and Eve were immortal, but if they disobeyed God, they would die. At first, Adam and Eve obeyed God’s command.
There were many animals in the garden, and the serpent was the sneakiest animal of all. The serpent called out to Eve and asked her about God’s command not to eat the
